32 years ago in 1991 the Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine declared independence.
That year I was graduating from high school. The world around me crumbled. I realized that my life was a lie. Everything I had been taught about the world was not true 1/
@ChShersh Figure out which kind of software you want to work on and pick up the dominant langauge of the ecosystem this kind of software is written in. Pick your tribe..
Do not do this. Don't you dare. The one true timezone for databases is always UTC.
You get this wrong at your peril and it haunts you forever. Allow me to demonstrate by sending some people into fits with three words:
"Google Standard Time."

HOW IS SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE LIKE A HOTEL ROOM FIRE?
There's a joke about 3 people dealing with a hotel room fire.
Say you're designing something, and you're at the start, just figuring out the components.
Should you be the engineer, the physicist, or the mathematician?
A difficult lesson I learned over the years is how hard it is to innovate on infrastructure because every step involves some local pain for each group in the short term, even though the global pain is reduced in the medium term. We need to pay our individual taxes and pay down our (technical) debt, yet there always seem to be a loophole or some other compelling reason to resist change. Configuration management, build systems, deployment, CI are just some of those hills.
"Hardcore" engineering at Twitter 2.0: "To address extreme level of data scraping & system manipulation", Twitter added rate limiting on the backend which seems to have created a retry storm from the client that DDoS'd Twitter for at least eight hours.
How it started: write a quick CLI to find things in schema files using JQ. How it's going: design a code-completion oriented PL to embed the CLI functionality in https://t.co/8jfxifyLra
Office routine in Ukraine: - “Guys, we need to conduct a board meeting to make contingency plan in case russians blow Zaporizhzhya NPP. There is likelihood this can happen in end July”
If you're a "Tech Lead," then lead. Stop coding and telling people the "best" way to do stuff. Instead, help them get up to your level with teaching, mentoring, coaching. "Tech Lead" is neither a programming nor a managing job (or at least it shouldn't be, IMO).
Looking for a remote-friendly engineering role, Rust/Haskell/whatever - as long as the team/culture is good, tell your friends! Currently located in UTC+12, although am flexible with working hours.
Epic Games is about to release a new functional logic language called #Verse. I'm astonished by how refreshing the concepts introduced by languages are: types are values, existential variables by default, and much more. Thank you @TimSweeneyEpic and @simonpj0 for this talk!
Datadog had its first global outage 2.5 months ago. ~2 weeks ago, their CEO said, on earnings:
"I encourage everyone to read [the postmortem] because it's a fascinating document."
But the company published no postmortem, still! I did this for them now:

Shame on you, @elonmusk. I know less of George Soros activity in the US, but his contribution to Russia's science, education, and civil society in 1990s was universally positive.
Soros' money allowed thousands of Russian scientists and students to stay in science and stay in Russia. His foundations helped to start and build most important educational initiatives in fields, in which the country was lagging decades.
The Central European University that Soros founded and endowed in Budapest has fast become the best university in Eastern Europe, a model for all aspiring universities around the world.
One thing that defines Soros is the people who hate him. These are the same thugs that have been destroying universities and civil society institutions, jail journalists and artists, and nowadays bomb Ukrainian cities.
Just to summarize the most important developments of the last 48h:
- Russian lines at Bakhmut crumbling
- Losing 2 jets and 3 choppers
- Rear bases in Russian-occupied Luhansk getting eliminated
- Russians deploying T-54/55
- Panic and chaos among Russian pilots/troops
- Prigozhin calling for rebellion
And the Ukrainian counteroffensive hasn't even started, yet.
