Each TBM is around 100 metres long and 15 metres in diameter, which is about the height of the Thebarton Theatre or the goal posts at Adelaide Oval.

Did you know the T2D Project will be the first road infrastructure project in Australia to run three large-scale Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) simultaneously?
The TBMs were named after prominent South Australian suffragists - Mary Lee, Catherine Helen Spence and Elizabeth Webb Nicholls.
The names were chosen following an overwhelming response from the community, with more than 2,000 submissions received.
Named and blessed π
π½οΈ Watch key moments from the official blessing ceremony of the first of three large Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) that will deliver the T2D Project.
Our three Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have been named in honour of three pioneering South Australian suffragists whose voices led the campaign that saw South Australia become the first place in the world to allow women to both vote and stand for election.
With the cutterhead now in place, the remaining TBM components will be assembled, before final testing and commissioning ahead of tunnelling beginning in the second half of 2026.

The third and final Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead has been lowered into the launch box at the T2D Projectβs Central North Precinct in Hilton. The cutterhead was lifted and lowered by a 500-tonne gantry crane.

This 285m-long shed at Waterloo Corner has already manufactured 1,000 precast tunnel-lining segments that are ready for installation in the T2D Project tunnels.
Assembly of the two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) at the Southern Construction Precinct is progressing well. Meet Construction Manager Derek Whelan as he takes us inside the launch box, where crews are busy preparing for tunnelling to begin in the second half of this year.

Major milestone π§
The 300-tonne cutterhead for the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has been successfully lifted and lowered into the Southern Precinct launch box.
Our team used 18 waterbags, each holding 10β50mΒ³ of water, to progressively load the crane. Waterbags are one of the safest ways to conduct this type of test, allowing load to be added gradually while the crane is closely monitored, rather than lifting the full load all at once.
ππ§ This is proof load testing of the 500-tonne gantry crane at the Southern Precinct construction site, a mandatory step in commissioning to ensure the crane is calibrated, tested and safe to operate at full capacity.
Did you know? π€
A doorframe slab plays an important role in getting our tunnel boring machines (TBMs) safely underground. Itβs one of the key pieces of preparatory work that helps set the stage for a smooth and controlled TBM launch.
This traffic switch is necessary to keep traffic on South Road moving while more construction continues.
