We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Nagarajan R, Scientist, CSR and Head – GIS and Remote Sensing at #MSSRF, on the successful defence of his thesis. Since 2019, under the expert mentorship of Dr V. Selvam, Dr Nagarajan has investigated the accuracy of remote geo-sensing techniques for measuring mangrove biomass and carbon stock. Utilising the #MachineLearning techniques, he explored both the spatial precision and scalability of these methods for #REDD+

Focusing on the Pichavaram mangrove forests, Dr Nagarajan analysed data from four different types of satellite imagery. His findings revealed an impressive accuracy rate of 96.6% in estimating biomass, along with reliable assessments of canopy height. When compared to existing models, his approach demonstrated superior precision.

The significance of Dr Nagarajan’s work extends beyond academic achievement. His research offers valuable insights for policy development, enabling the design of effective #CarbonCapture financing projects based on robust data. Additionally, these findings can assist government agencies in formulating informed policies for the #conservation and #restoration of vital #mangrove ecosystems.
