About 8 months ago I went for a walk with my daughters to the local shops and to get some exercise while I was pregnant. We bumped into an elderly couple who live down the road from us, both Holocaust survivors, and the old man started talking to us about the anxiety they’ve been feeling. Their kids and grandchildren live in Germany and they have few friends still around. They spoke with my daughters who warmed to them almost immediately.

He had said their home doesn’t have a very good safe room, and they refused to go to a retirement care home. My daughter had told him we have a pretty secure room that is not too small and if they’d ever need they’re more than welcome to come over.

He knocked on our door earlier today to say they’d heard about the imminent attack coming. They’d gone to stay with friends elsewhere in the country over the first two attacks but their friends are away now. So they’re going to stay with us. I’ve just gone to collect some things for them and I’ll go help them over in a little bit. I personally get more anxious around people than I am of the missiles, but they’re lovely and they’re afraid.

These are the people who once fought for our country at its birth over 70 years ago. These are the original band of heroes. I might have to give them a crash course in sign language but I’m looking forward to hearing some of their life stories from back in the days.

It’s moments like these that make me feel blessed to be back home here. Our people are the most amazing on Earth. Everyone has a story to tell and a love and respect for one another. It reminds me why we fight so hard. It’s not just for our children, but for the sacrifices of all those who defended our country so that we could even be here now.

I’ve never loved Israel more than I do right this second.
