“Don’t ask me any questions about what Israel is going to do until you disarm Hezbollah,” Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told Lebanese and international reporters in Beirut.

Visiting the country as part of a U.S. congressional delegation with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), he declared: “If you disarm Hezbollah, we’ll have a good conversation. If you don’t, it’s a meaningless conversation.”

The group met with President Joseph Aoun before holding a press conference, followed by another briefing by Trump’s envoys Tom Barrack and Morgan Ortagus.

Graham insisted Lebanon is “going backward, not forward” unless it strips Palestinians and Hezbollah of weapons and makes the Lebanese Army the “central repository of arms.”

“Israel’s never going to look at Lebanon differently until you do something different,” he told the Lebanese people — who lost nearly 4,000 citizens, saw more than 16,000 wounded, and 1.2 million displaced at the hands of Israel’s invasion and war in 2024.

At one point, Graham reminded journalists that he and Rep. Wilson are U.S. “appropriators — “we have the money,” he said — underscoring Washington’s leverage over Lebanon’s military and financial aid.

Graham — joined by Shaheen and Wilson, who echoed his broader demands — pressed Lebanon to disarm its main defense force against Israel’s expanding occupation and near-daily cross-border strikes, even as Israel, which has already blown past two withdrawal deadlines under the November ceasefire, and which continues to illegally occupy five outposts in the south, maintains its posture.

Pressed repeatedly by reporters on what Israel would do in return, Graham’s answer was the same: “Then you talk to Israel — once Hezbollah has been disarmed.” He portrayed the resistance group — which continues to enjoy massive popular support in the country’s south — as foreign-controlled and illegitimate: Hezbollah is “not loyal to the people”; its “agenda is not Lebanon’s agenda,” he told one Lebanese reporter.

For Graham and the Trump administration, once Hezbollah is gone only then will Israel and the U.S. consider treating Lebanon differently. He was adamant that disarmament would be the country’s sole path to relief — as he dangled prospects of a U.S.–Lebanon defense pact down the line.

This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. First, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings.

Allah knows I gave every effort and all my strength to be a support and a voice for my people, ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of the Jabalia refugee camp. My hope was that Allah would extend my life so I could return with my family and loved ones to our original town of occupied Asqalan (Al-Majdal). But Allah’s will came first, and His decree is final. I have lived through pain in all its details, tasted suffering and loss many times, yet I never once hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or falsification—so that Allah may bear witness against those who stayed silent, those who accepted our killing, those who choked our breath, and whose hearts were unmoved by the scattered remains of our children and women, doing nothing to stop the massacre that our people have faced for more than a year and a half.

I entrust you with Palestine—the jewel in the crown of the Muslim world, the heartbeat of every free person in this world. I entrust you with its people, with its wronged and innocent children who never had the time to dream or live in safety and peace. Their pure bodies were crushed under thousands of tons of Israeli bombs and missiles, torn apart and scattered across the walls.

I urge you not to let chains silence you, nor borders restrain you. Be bridges toward the liberation of the land and its people, until the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our stolen homeland. I entrust you to take care of my family. I entrust you with my beloved daughter Sham, the light of my eyes, whom I never got the chance to watch grow up as I had dreamed.

I entrust you with my dear son Salah, whom I had wished to support and accompany through life until he grew strong enough to carry my burden and continue the mission.

I entrust you with my beloved mother, whose blessed prayers brought me to where I am, whose supplications were my fortress and whose light guided my path. I pray that Allah grants her strength and rewards her on my behalf with the best of rewards.

I also entrust you with my lifelong companion, my beloved wife, Umm Salah (Bayan), from whom the war separated me for many long days and months. Yet she remained faithful to our bond, steadfast as the trunk of an olive tree that does not bend—patient, trusting in Allah, and carrying the responsibility in my absence with all her strength and faith.

I urge you to stand by them, to be their support after Allah Almighty. If I die, I die steadfast upon my principles. I testify before Allah that I am content with His decree, certain of meeting Him, and assured that what is with Allah is better and everlasting.

O Allah, accept me among the martyrs, forgive my past and future sins, and make my blood a light that illuminates the path of freedom for my people and my family. Forgive me if I have fallen short, and pray for me with mercy, for I kept my promise and never changed or betrayed it.

Do not forget Gaza… And do not forget me in your sincere prayers for forgiveness and acceptance.

An Israeli soldier published an op-ed in Haaretz today on the Israeli military’s use of Palestinians as human shields. Here’s an excerpt:

“I saw that six investigations were opened by the Military Police (MP) regarding the use of Palestinians as human shields, and I almost choked. I’ve seen cover-ups in my life, but this is a new low. In Gaza, human shields are used at least six times a day. If the MP wants to do its job seriously, they should open at least 2,190 investigations. But the MP just wants to pretend to the world that we’re investigating ourselves, so they find a few scapegoats and pin everything on them.

I was in Gaza for nine months. I saw many new procedures. One of the worst was the “Mosquito Procedure”: innocent Palestinians were forced to enter homes in Gaza and “clear” them, meaning checking for militants or explosives. We gave it various names, “Mosquito Procedure,” “Shawish” (slaves), “Platforms.”

I first encountered this in December 2023, two months into the ground maneuver. This was long before the shortage of “Sting” dogs became the insane and unofficial excuse for this insane and unofficial procedure. I didn’t understand back then how common it would become. Today, almost every company holds “Shawish,” and infantry forces don’t enter a house before the “Shawish” clears it. This means there are 4 “Shawish” in a platoon, 12 in a battalion, and 36 in a brigade. At least. We’re holding a layer of slaves, and the MP is trying to cover it up with six investigations.
