Being a good coach means telling players what they need to hear, not just what they want to hear.
Being coachable means receiving correction without mistaking it for criticism.
I used to train kids every summer to build velocity, arm strength, and total-body power. Every single kid I trained got stronger and threw harder. The results were never the issue.
The problem was that it wasn’t a sustainable business. Most kids didn’t want that kind of work. They wanted air conditioning, shiny equipment, and comfort. We built strength the old-fashioned way — battle ropes, giant tires, sledgehammers, wooden boxes, medicine balls, plyometrics, core work, and a real throwing program.
It was two hours of hard, punishing work, three days a week — and that didn’t even include bullpens.
That kind of training gets results, but the truth is, not many kids are willing to push through enough to earn them.
The new thing is for players to miss their high school teams playoff game to attend prom.
Get you some of that.
If a kid that is committed to your college misses his high school playoff game and you don't pull the offer, you're part of the problem.
Amazing insight from legendary MLB scout Gordon Blakeley about taking warmups seriously between innings and before the game. You never know who is watching! ⚾️🔥
For all the velocity experts out there…
So are we saying the pitcher who throws 85 mph, commands the zone, and can land two off-speed pitches for strikes anytime has no chance of playing D1 baseball?
Or are we pretending those guys don’t still get outs? Just wondering?
