@pureshimon@nbrempel@levelsio Imagine you wanna grow your country by 5% vs 50%. Only so much gold to buy without shooting yourself in the foot. I suspect it severely capped growth and came with all sorts of problems that we take for granted these days but I do agree that it might not have been the best move.
All the hype & discussions around the potentials of ChatGPT reminded of the excellent last chapter of Programming Beyond Practices by Gregory Brown called “The Future of Software Development”:
What programming might be like if we could focus purely on problem solving and communication rather than writing code?
It’s true that some folks among us are here solely for the tools, the code, the intellectual challenge of it all. But for the rest of us, that’s a matter of necessity and the environment we work in, not a defining characteristic of who we are.
My fundamental belief is that programmers are no less concerned for human interests than anyone else in the world; it’s just hard to make that your main focus in life when you spend a good portion of your day chasing down a missing semicolon, reading source code for an undocumented library, or staring at a binary dump of some text that you suspect has been corrupted by a botched Unicode conversion.
And my great hope is that if we fight against the influence of our rough, low-level, tedious tools and gradually replace them with things that make us feel closer to the outcome of our work, then our tech-centric industry focus will shift sharply and permanently to a human-centric outlook.
@JasonSCui I’m as sceptical as the next guy but swear by magnesium. Couldn’t sleep very deep for the last 10 years. Now I sleep like a log whenever I take magnesium.
@yishan 3) Influence does not always mean a visual continuity. Look at cubism and its offshoots. The continuity is in the abstraction, not on the canvas. I doubt there will be a powerful enough AI to capture this in the next 20 years.
@yishan 2) everything is a copy of a copy of a copy. Introducing ownership of visual styles at the end of a multiple millennium long chain is almost colonial in terms of thinking and im pretty sure will lead to a ton of collisions.
@GergelyOrosz There was an interesting article about how 2008 caused an influx of managers from banks into tech and claimed thats what caused the rise of tech bros and an increased emphasis on shareholder value in tech in 2010s. The claim certainly had merit, wonder if this is the second wave.
@gamespotting@paulg Exactly. If anything, cinema is a scalable optimization of theatre. You reuse the same performance, instead of re-performing it every different audience.
@RoboSabs@ID_AA_Carmack Interesting similarity with head trauma/memory loss. Had a nasty fall while skateboarding. Gained consciousness in the hospital getting stitches. Apparently some lady helped me up and walked me in there, I recalled my dads # from memory. I don’t remember any of these events.
@SahilBloom I’ve seen fake delays work first-hand and validated through usertesting in software.
Can be generalized as a mismatch between expected and actual output required the reach desired outcome.
I’d bet this can be prevented by managing expectations better/explaining beforehand.
@REGIONRAT@ID_AA_Carmack This just sounds like he identified what didn’t work in his routine and fixed only that. Not an elaborate plan to root out all distractions.
Incremental measurable improvements are key in any optimization scenario.
Is Dall-e supposed to have access to user data? @sama@gdb@ilyasut@OpenAI Bottom right is my name on the tshirt, which was not in the prompt. If yes, why? If no, how did this happen?
@gercheq@stripe @PrepaidFS Fraud is still an unfortunate reality of online payments, at least until sth like an easy blockchain-based payment solution becomes commonplace. Not much u can do against stolen CCs. All you can do is mitigate the risk by working with riskified etc.
@JohnSwihart3 Hi Mr. Swihart! Very random, out of the blue question: do you happen to still have a copy or notes for what I'm assuming to be an original score by you around the 15 min mark in HIMYM s08e13? (ep. Band or DJ)? It truly is sth special.
