@stephenrkell I partition /var separately, and I could see the sense in doing the same for /usr/local and /opt.

@stephenrkell On the Ubuntu systems I maintain /bin, /lib* and /sbin are all just links to their counterparts under /usr. So looks like it really expects / and /usr to be the same filesystem these days.

This has caused some fun today. Some odd errors related to the old certificate still being on servers, so validation of chain failing. Fortunately just needed to update ca-certificates on Ubuntu, once I realised that was the problem :-)
