@pwharris@CAMathCouncil I saw a lot of replies adjusting 36 and 8% so I wondered what would happen if I kept 36:
36 is 1% of 3600
36 is 2% of 1800
36 is 4% of 900
36 is 8% of 450
I worked off of 1% of 3600, then I think I doubled the % and halved the total each time, so multiplied by 2/2?
@pwharris Oh! How I would use this in teaching: It's not always necessary to crunch all the numbers. What is the least amount of calculating we have to do?
@pwharris I would fill it in with 5x2. The denominators didn't change so I can ignore them. The numerators become
5x2 = ___ x 1, so the ___ is 5x2. That's the laziest thing I could think of!
Also curious what you do when you KNOW your middle and high school students can't read the problems.
DMs are open if you want to keep your reply private.

Math teachers: Listening to #SoldAStory podcast and wondering if it resonates with you if you see students struggling to read word problems.
Seems important to ask what reading instruction in early grades looks like in your district. #mtbos#iteachmath

Any middle or high school math teachers listening to the #SoldAStory podcast about reading instruction?
Does it resonate with you regarding students' reading difficulties in math class?
@Mathowitz @mpershan Came here to suggest that second part. Is there a sentence that goes through the student's head? "What number plus seven is nine?" Or "2+7 is 9 so 9 minus 7 is 2" or "9-7=2 because 2+7=9"? (Would've chosen the right side, though!)
@PatNelson_BC Interesting! One thing I think is true in Alaska, is that you don't have to rank all choices if you don't want to. I wonder how that affects the outcome.
Middle school teachers or homeschoolers: I'm from the math world, so I don't know the answer to this:
Are there basic learn-to-read programs for middle school students who are far behind in reading? Looking for phonics based, but age-appropriate for MS.
@StudyMaths I have successfully avoided subtraction since about 3rd grade. Why do all that borrowing, crossing out, repaying, regrouping stuff when you can just figure out what to add? Lucky that my teachers let me get away with it.
@dailystem Yep. Remembered to write the cost on the new one so we can compare next time.
Would be interesting to see a whole thread of these!

@pwharris I was curious what would happen if I used some subtraction, then got distracted by the numbers I was supposed to subtract...
Is it a coincidence or something about the 4s and 5s???

@pwharris I wish it was 27 x 3, which is 3x3x3x3 or 81.
So how to deal with 2 1/3 being 2/3 away from 3?
1/3 of 27 is 9, so 2/3 is 18.
81-18=63
I think I did 27 x (3 - 2/3)
My confidence lies in others getting 63 ☺️
