@LizzieBryan0357 @psyc220 #CD7 @psyc220 Generational trauma is so real and lots of times psychologists only address current behavior instead of fixing underlying ultimate causes of problematic behavior from parents and grandparents.
@ScoutJSF @psyc220 #CD7 @psyc220 So true! I'm in a personality psych class right now and for the longest time research completely disregarded the role of culture in personality formation. This generation of psychologists are going to be so much more knowledgeable because of classes like this one.
#CD7 @psyc220 In the future I hope to be a school psychologist where I test students for learning disabilities and developmental disorders. I think people in this role can inadvertently apply their own biases to their diagnoses which can affect the level of care 1/3
#CD7 @psyc220 students receive from the school, their parents, and potentially from a psychiatrist. Actions I could take to dismantle oppression would be to be aware of my own biases from my upbringing and making sure that I do not apply them to people because they can be 2/3
@BayleeHowell06 @psyc220 #CD6 @psyc220 Agreed. Because mental health is often invisible, we sometimes forget about its impacts. How society expects men and women to deal with trauma is totally related to availability of care.
@JuliaDAgostino2 @psyc220 #CD6 @psyc220 So true. I think ageism is such a silent oppression in our country, not many people think about it. My uncle even won an ageism lawsuit against his former employer a couple years ago!
#CD6 @psyc220 One intersection that hasn't been discussed yet is between SES and sexuality. Being poor can be compounded by sexuality because some employers, because of their own biases, will not employ LGBT+ people, thus further entrenching them in their poverty.
@4ngel4tr4n @psyc220 #CD5a I'd never considered the Quad to be inaccessible, but you make a good point! Wheelchair users and those who use canes and other mobility aids would most likely experience difficulty with such uneven ground.
@HottleAudrey @psyc220 #CD5a Definitely! And even with ICS, if someone were using a wheelchair, getting off and on the bus is not really doable without time and assistance.
@JordynCrane123 @psyc220 #CD5b And sympathy! A lot of social media creators love the attention associated with people feeling and for them, so will showcase their disabled friends and family for that attention.
@KeiraMills333 @psyc220 #CD5b Perfect example of inspiration porn. I never really grasped what that phrase meant, but the TED talk and this example have definitely cleared it up for me.
@psyc220 #CD5b Grace Meng, the representative of the 6th district of New York, recently introduced a bill to improve the interactions between first responders and people with disabilities. The legislation would place a voluntary identifier on the drivers' license 1/3
@psyc220 #CD5b of a disabled individual and would provide funding for training first responders to recognize the identifier and respond to the individual accordingly. This relates to the social model of disability in that it recognizes that the person with the disability 2/3
@psyc220 #CD5a locations on campus. Many people say that the Village is the best place to live during freshman year, but the buildings do not have elevators, which would make such an experience inaccessible to physically challenged or disabled students. 2/2
@psyc220 #CD5a One example of a barrier for people with disabilities (particularly those with physical/movement disabilities) is that many dorms on campus do not have elevators to the upper floors. This limits the opportunities for disabled students to live in certain 1/2
#220IdealAffect Contentment. I might feel this emotion on a Friday when all of my homework is done and I have nothing to worry about with the whole weekend to do whatever I want.
@GCurcurato @psyc220 @psyc220 #CD4 We forget that men can be oppressed too and by the same system that oppresses women. Women are expected to be quiet/caring, and men conversely must be stoic/aggressive. So even though ppl should be feminists because it helps others, the movement would help them too.
@amandafrisby220 @psyc220 @psyc220 #CD4 I like how you linked feminism to other social justice movements! We often forget how interconnected progress/success in other movements is.
