Everlong by Foo Fighters was released in August 1997 as the second single from the album The Colour and the Shape.

The song was born during one of Dave Grohl’s darkest moments: he was going through a divorce, homeless, and the band was on the verge of breaking up. While recording “Monkey Wrench,” Grohl came up with the main riff. Over Christmas 1996, he wrote the entire lyrics in just 45 minutes, inspired by his new relationship with Louise Post (lead singer of Veruca Salt)

He recorded it in Hollywood with Gil Norton. Louise Post sang the backing vocals and the “doo doo doo” parts over the phone from Chicago. The music video, directed by Michel Gondry, is a surrealist classic in which Grohl appears as Sid Vicious and Taylor Hawkins as Nancy Spungen.

It became one of Foo Fighters’ greatest anthems: they close almost all their concerts with it, the acoustic version is legendary, and it was the last song Taylor Hawkins ever played live. Today, it has surpassed 1.7 billion streams.
