It literally hasn't stopped raining here in Burlington. NNE. Heavy downpour mixed with hail. Thunder lightning. Just feels like this system keeps back building.
This is just frightening for Montpelier. The Winooski is nearly at Irene levels now and rapidly rising. The crest is now forecast to hit nearly 23 feet - which would put downtown under 4 to 7 feet of #flood water. This is going to be devastating for Vermont's capital. #VTwx
Looks like all but one east-west route through Vermont is now closed due to flooding. Only way through the state is on Rt. 9 *over* Hogback Mountain. That road is probably gnarly this evening, too. #VTwx#VTflood23
Absolutely DO NOT drive south of Montpelier β and definitely donβt attempt to drive north of it tonight. I-89 completely closed, all possible routes through backroads impassable. STOP driving in the oncoming lane thinking youβll bypass the traffic. YOU ARE ENDANGERING LIVES.
The Winooski River at Montpelier, Vermont just surpassed the level seen during Irene in 2011 and continues to rapidly rise. A life-threatening situation in central Vermont!
Dangerous flooding is continuing this afternoon throughout most of Vermont. Almost three dozen state roads are closed due to high water, and additional closures are possible as rivers and streams continue to rise. This figure does not include town roads.
@troublesometots This is such an interesting thread. And the issue goes beyond Town Meeting Day. It takes so much time for a resident to participate in local government because issues begin in committees/commissions/boards. Moving more meetings to include hybrid options has helped.
