Dad of 6. Husband to a smoking hot wife. Old McDonald would be jealous of my farm. Loudest MS CX Coach in SLV. Tweets are from me and are not free med advice.
Watched survivor 50 with the family this year. It was the first for all 8 of us to watch. Safe to say we had a favorite. @fields_cirie (named a family cow after her!) promise it’s a compliment!
Every coach has that one quiet kid.
Shows up.
Does the work.
Never says a word louder than a whisper.
And then one day…
competition starts
and they turn into an absolute menace.
You look at your assistant like,
“Where has THAT been hiding?”
They don’t brag.
They don’t chest-bump.
They just walk back like,
“Okay, what’s next?”
Quiet kids are wild.
You think they’re shy.
Turns out they’ve been studying everyone in the room
and choosing violence at the perfect moment.
@CoachDistance I (MS coach) don’t do end of the year awards. Rather, I do weekly runners of the week so every kid gets at least one award a year. In HS our coach used to give trophies away to each senior from the race they performed well in.
@Siemers_XC_TF Yes!! This only supports my belief that coaches attitude and belief is crucial in success of a program. We aren’t delusional, we just understand how attitude can unlock potential in athletes ! Just providing positive support, affirmation, and just being present. Good job coach!!
@Siemers_XC_TF Wow. Well said. I caught myself today…”maybe we should’ve done X..” and wondering “did we do too many hill workouts?”…,thanks for the reminder. The wok is done, now I just need to let them RUN!
@CoachDistance MS coach here. We do a yearly summer program for 6-12 grades.(1-2 days a month max. HS coaches and I focus on culture- 99% of meets are together/games/run together. Small school in South Colorado, I had 45 show up on day 1! (A record!) practice is energetic and fun. Hard work.
Just left a great meeting with @RepJeffHurd and his staff during a visit to SLVHealth here in Alamosa. What a refreshing experience to hear his concerns and questions regarding healthcare in Colorado! 6 weeks in and already running with it!
@bradcurtis18@CoachDistance We practice at 4pm to 6pm. Most students have early morning seminary at 6:30am until school at 7:50. Makes for some hot practices sometimes. Not too bad here in Colorado overall.
@steven_montoya@CoachDistance Small school in southern Colorado - ~300 students. 14 girls and 7 boys on our team. We compete with volleyball, soccer, and football. Our program is growing!
Coaching isn't a job.
It is a calling.
One that few will ever understand.
Here are 10 Truths of Being a COACH.
1: Spousal Support is Crucial - Coaching can strain family life. A supportive spouse is a must. There is no other way.
2: It's a 24/7 Commitment - Coaching is more than a job; it's a way of life. You'll spend tons of time planning, analyzing, and strategizing. It will consume your mind and thinking. But when your team succeeds, it's all worth it!
3: Critics Will Come - It is unfortunate, but it is what it is. No matter how well you do, there will always be critics. Accept it; you know your team best.
4: There will be Highs and Lows - It is guaranteed. But the highs will be some of the best memories in your life. And the lows will be great learning opportunities for everyone. It prepares everyone for life.
5: Don’t do it for $$$ - High School Coaching doesn't pay much, but it's not about that. It's a calling, a lifestyle driven by love for the game and helping young athletes grow and develop to be their best. It is about building a TEAM.
6. Success Takes Time - Building a great team requires patience. There will be ups and downs, but stick with it, and you'll see results. Building a positive team culture is the #1 job of a coach. Do not forget this.
7: You Will be Humbled - I promise. Coaching is a very humbling profession. You will have very tough losses, and you will wonder how it happened. Never assume anything. Working with 16-17-year-old kids promises many surprises!
8: You Won't Please Everyone - Tough decisions come with the job. Not everyone will agree. Remember, you're working for the team's benefit, not just one person. Make yourself happy. Don't try to please others.
9. Players Need to Want It - As a coach, you can inspire and motivate, but players must want success. Encourage hard work, commitment, and goal-setting; let them own their success.
10. It is Always Worth It - Despite the challenges, coaching is incredibly rewarding. Seeing your players become strong, confident individuals is priceless. Watching your team win when the odds are stacked against you is inspiring. Winning a Championship is incredible!
Choose to Coach.
We need you!
