It takes longer because state leaders passed laws to send mail in ballots to every registered voter, allows them to be postmarked on the day of the election, allows 7 days for them to be returned and then 10 days to “cure” signature verification issues after that. That’s a policy choice. State leaders could choose to have different deadlines & the count would go faster. I’m not endorsing or opposing the policy…just explaining how it works.

How does signature verification work in L.A. County?

First, ballots are quickly scanned by a computer that matches the signature with signatures that are on file.

If the computer recognizes a signature, then the ballot moves on to be counted.

If it doesn’t, the ballot is then closely scrutinized by a human being who determines if it matches.

If they determine it doesn’t, that voter is contacted by the county and has 10 days to show up and “cure” their ballot.

If they don’t, the ballot isn’t counted.

In Montana, about 300K people vote. In CA, about 24 million people vote
