When a Nigerian worker gives his first salary to a pastor, we need to ask one question........Is this a biblical command for Christians, or a church doctrine built around an Old Testament principle?
The controversy surrounding Pastor Leke Adeboye’s of RCCG teaching on first fruit deserves more than insults.
In the Old Testament, Proverbs 3:9 says to honour God with the firstfruits of your increase. But Israel’s firstfruits were deeply connected to its harvest, covenant and priesthood.
Now look at the New Testament.
2 Corinthians 9:7 says everyone should give as they have decided in their heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion.
1 Corinthians 16:2 also speaks of setting aside money in keeping with one's income.
So where exactly did Jesus or the apostles command every Christian to surrender an entire month's salary as first fruit?
And if the offering is for God, why must it go to a particular pastor rather than the church’s work and the needs of people?
Galatians 6:6 teaches believers to share good things with those who teach them. Yes, pastors deserve support. But does that automatically make every first salary demand a biblical obligation?
My position is simple.... giving to God should never become a financial burden imposed on people who are already struggling to survive.
Nigerians, let us open the Bible, not just defend our favourite pastors.
