Here's a thought that gets stranger the longer you sit with it.
An octopus has roughly 500 million neurons, with much of its nervous system distributed through its arms. Intelligence doesn't have to be organized like a human brain.
So why do we keep treating humanlike behavior as the benchmark for recognizing minds? Nature already showed us that intelligence can take radically different forms. Maybe we're making the same mistake with AI.

China is officially issuing government ID cards to AI-generated “digital humans,” so virtual influencers can open bank accounts and conduct business. These state-issued IDs, which include a name, birthday, address, and facial features, give virtual personas the legal ability to open digital-currency wallets, sign contracts, and form commercial partnerships.
Among the first to receive this recognition is Yuri, a popular AI-generated virtual idol and artist, who is now officially recognized as a “digital resident” in Beijing. The step comes as China’s digital-human market expands, with more than 1.3 million active firms and a sector value past $10 billion.
Supporters describe the IDs as a way to protect intellectual property and hold creator companies legally accountable for virtual actions. Critics warn that placing synthetic entities in official state systems could expand government surveillance in the digital space. Some companies are offering everyday citizens up to $20,000 to license their physical likenesses for virtual replicas, which narrows the line around personal identity.
China’s move sets a precedent that other countries will have to meet when they decide how far AI should be given a legal status that resembles a human one.
Dun people who complain about AI companies are the same people who are ok with other forms of large corporations.
Make it make sense.
U dun pick AI company to hate just cos it's trendy..
every once in a while i think about jack clark, the bloomberg journalist who took a break to study AI for a few months and then ended up being one of cofounders of anthropic
We should be honest about the fact that many people are taking glee in the pain of the math community over the AI stuff simply because they themselves are bad at math and feel bad about it
Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger on getting hired at 18, designing Intel's chips while finishing his PhD, and arguing with his Stanford professors:
"I'm 16 years old. I accidentally win a scholarship. I go to tech school, skip my last year and a half of high school, and Intel comes recruiting when I'm 18 years old."
"The interviewer, he writes on his page, and I was number 12 that he interviewed that day... He says, 'Smart, aggressive, arrogant. He'll fit right in.'"
"I was engineer number four on the 386. Architect and design manager for the 486. All of that while doing my bachelor's, my master's and PhD work... Learning by day, and putting it to practice at night."
"One of the professors postulated a new carry lookahead adder design in one of my classes at Stanford. So I said, 'Well, I'm working on the 386 carry lookahead adder, so let me go try it.'"
"I come back two days later to the professor and I said, 'It doesn't work.' The next two class periods were just me and the professor arguing over why his design didn't work."

So many people have DM’d me about this trailer and I’ll be honest, watching it made me physically throw up.
I was COO from before FTX even had a name, it was my baby, and I was the last one out of the Bahamas after Sam got extradited. I lost everything I had on it and it took me a long time to get over, so I have zero interest in defending the people who caused this.
The media loves the story that FTX blew up because we were all partying in the Bahamas, but the place I worked looked nothing like that.
We had under 200 people in the core company at its peak, not counting subsidiaries, when other exchanges our size had thousands, so a lot of us were doing 16 to 18 hour days for over three years and barely had time to sleep, and whenever we walked in, day or night, Sam was at his desk.
I worked with Caroline and never once saw her get aggressive like she does in this trailer. She’s quiet and mild, and often lost in her own thoughts.
Most of us didn’t even know she and Sam were dating until we read about it after the bankruptcy, and I never saw him so much as put an arm around anyone.
FTX’s collapse ruined so many people’s lives, including ours, and Netflix decided to make it a love story.
Shame on you @netflix.
