This afternoon, I had the pleasure of meeting H.E. Abdullah Hassan A. Alzahrani, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Ethiopia, for a fruitful exchange on further deepening the longstanding partnership between Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia.
We discussed opportunities to strengthen our bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including Saudi Arabia’s candidature of H.E. Dr. Hanan Hassan Balkhy for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the 2027–2031 term. Ethiopia recognizes her distinguished leadership and extensive global health expertise and wishes her every success in the forthcoming election.
Ethiopia attaches great importance to its multifaceted relations with Saudi Arabia and remains committed to advancing an even stronger, mutually beneficial partnership between our two countries.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos highlighted key continental and global issues in his remarks delivered today at the opening of the 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa.
The Minister noted that the session is taking place at a defining moment, as the international order and geopolitical structures are undergoing profound transformation. He observed that geopolitical competition, technological disruption, climate pressures, and growing contestation over strategic resources are shaping a new international dispensation. In this context, he stressed that Africa must seize the opportunity to become a strategic actor capable of providing African solutions to global challenges.
Gedion further stated that the African Union must emerge as a credible voice that advances the continent's priorities and safeguards its interests. Noting that Africa is home to eight of the world's ten fastest-growing economies in 2026, he said the continent is poised to become the engine of global economic growth in the second half of the 21st century. He also reaffirmed Ethiopia's commitment to the African Union and to promoting continental unity and strength.
The Minister emphasized the need for the African Union to secure a sustainable and reliable source of financing to effectively implement its decisions. He also underscored the importance of managing the continent's shared resources for integration and prosperity based on the principles of cooperation, equity, and mutual benefit, and stressed that Africa's challenges should be addressed through African institutions and frameworks.
Gedion further expressed Ethiopia's solidarity with the countries affected by the recent Ebola outbreak in parts of the continent and commended the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for its preparedness and response efforts.

ETHIOPIA KEEPS DELIVERING!
Today, we inaugurated the Arba Minch Conference Resort, another magnificent outcome of our 'Dine for Generation' initiative. This modern resort features state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a conference hall capable of hosting over 1,300 people and a unique floating restaurant on the lake. It will strengthen our vision of making Ethiopia a hub for international forums by expanding conference tourism beyond our capital city, while creating vast employment opportunities for local residents.
I call upon all our citizens, the diaspora, and the international community to visit and experience this new jewel of our nation, and to take part in this new chapter of Ethiopia's tourism and conference sector!

Honored to deliver the opening remarks at the Hili Regional Dialogue – Africa Edition 2026 in Addis Ababa. Organized by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) and the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA), in partnership with Ethiopia’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA). The forum convenes policymakers, diplomats, business leaders, and researchers to advance Africa–UAE cooperation.
As Africa increasingly establishes itself as a key driver of global growth, partnerships grounded in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and long-term commitment have become more important than ever.
Enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, technology, and sustainable development, supported by continuous dialogue and joint action, can help Africa and the UAE build a more resilient and prosperous future.

I had a constructive discussion with Mamadou Dian Balde, UNHCR Regional Bureau Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, on deepening our partnership to support refugees and host communities in Ethiopia.
Our exchange underscored the importance of sustainable refugee inclusion, enhanced international solidarity, predictable financing, and continued support for the implementation of the MAKATET ROADMAP, which seeks to transition from project-based interventions to integrated and sustainable approaches to refugee inclusion.
As one of Africa’s largest refugee-hosting countries, Ethiopia remains committed to upholding its open-door policy and advancing refugee protection and durable solutions. This commitment continues despite mounting challenges, including declining funding, climate-related shocks, increasing pressure on land and water resources, and the growing impact on the livelihoods of refugee-hosting communities.

I was pleased to meet with Julia Duncan, Vice CEO of Bayer AG, for a constructive discussion on deepening cooperation in Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors.
Our exchange centered on opportunities to expand investment, promote local manufacturing, strengthen resilient domestic supply chains, foster innovation, and enhance capacity building in the Healthcare sector.
Ethiopia remains firmly committed to developing a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership with Bayer AG, advancing investment and collaboration that improve healthcare services, increase agricultural productivity, and contribute to sustainable economic growth for the benefit of Ethiopians and the broader region.
Bayer has maintained a strong presence in Ethiopia for many years through the distribution of its pharmaceutical products and has played a meaningful role in supporting the country’s development goals. Through its “Bridging the Seed Gap” initiative, the company has helped smallholder farmers gain better access to quality seeds. More recently, its partnership with the Ministry of Health has focused on expanding access to essential health products and services, particularly in the areas of non-communicable diseases, family planning, and maternal and child nutrition. We also look forward to welcoming Bayer AG CEO Bill Anderson to Addis Ababa in the near future and to further advancing this important partnership.
