U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Joins Celebration of the Dalai Lama's 91st Birthday
Our community is grieving the loss of Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen outside the United Nations. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and the Tibetan community in Queens and across our city.
We must honor his life by continuing the fight for human rights—here at home and around the world.
Once the magnificent summer residence of the 14th Dalai Lama before his journey to India, this 20-room palace in Lhasa, Tibet, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site today. @gauravcsawant reports from Lhasa, tracing the rich history and legacy of His Holiness' former summer retreat.

Tomorrow, the Office of Tibet in Pretoria celebrates the 91st birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in this, his Year of Compassion. 🖤
The Arch adored him. Theirs was one of the great friendships of our age: two men who understood that laughter is medicine for the soul, who held firm together on everything that mattered, and who wrote a book on joy to prove that suffering never gets the final word.
The Arch called him his mischievous, beloved brother. We call him family.
Happy 91st birthday, Your Holiness. May the world keep learning what you and the Arch never stopped teaching: that compassion is not softness. It is the bravest thing there is.
📍 Celebration: 11 July, 12:30pm, Office of Tibet, Pretoria

#TibetIsNotChina : Don’t know why no one talks about Tibet , people fighting for their homeland for decades against a forceful occupation, yet the world has largely chosen to stay silent.

“Lobga believed that the struggles of Tibetans, Uyghurs, Hong Kongers, Southern Mongolians, and all people living under authoritarian rule were connected because freedom itself is connected. He believed that what happens to one people eventually matters to us all.”

On 2 July 2025, His Holiness the Dalai Lama in his statement affirmed that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue. His Holiness reiterated that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognize the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter.
The Chinese Communist Regime has no legitimate authority whatsoever regarding the reincarnation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, as it is a matter of Tibetan Buddhist religious tradition.
Seine Heiligkeit der Dalai Lama dankt in einer Botschaft allen für die warmherzigen Glückwünsche zu seinem 91. Geburtstag am 6. Juli 2026.

A week after Tibetan independence activist Lobga Rangzen self-immolated near the UN headquarters in New York, protesters gathered to demand international action on Tibet and raise concerns about China's new ethnic unity law
During the audience, a student asked His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama how to overcome the fear of examinations. In response, His Holiness stressed that confidence comes through diligent preparation.
He advised students to study as much as they can and face their examinations with courage. Recalling his own experience of preparing for the rigorous Geshe examinations in Tibet, His Holiness said he studied extensively with his debating partners, who challenged him without regard to his status as the Dalai Lama. Their rigorous debates motivated him to work even harder, giving him the confidence to face his examinations successfully.
His Holiness encouraged students to study diligently, emphasizing that sincere effort and thorough preparation are the keys to overcoming exam anxiety.
In his final statement before setting himself on fire in front of the UN in New York, Lobga Rangzen thanks #Tibetans in #Tibet who "have been working sincerely to preserve + revive our spoken language, script, religion and culture' https://t.co/DTfrMX6hOO
