While speaking on CBS radio, Hon. Ssemujju Nganda compared what NUP is doing bringing what he calls “ba kapere” to Parliament, to Museveni’s deliberate dilution of government by appointing people like Nabbanja to key positions like Prime Minister. I think that comparison is shallow and misses the heart of what is happening.

Museveni appoints people who lack both competence and independence because his goal is to weaken state institutions until they serve him and his interests rather than serving Ugandans. He fills offices with loyalists who will not question him and who often cannot even perform the work required, because a broken system keeps him safe.

NUP is doing something entirely different. They are opening Parliament to people who may not have a string of academic titles but who are leaders in their communities, people with lived experience and a will to serve. It is a deliberate rebellion against the elitism that has kept Parliament as an exclusive club of the so-called “learned,” many of whom have degrees yet keep voting away the country’s future: removing both age and term limits, endorsing senseless loans, and protecting corruption.

Breaking that old decorum is something we all should be supporting and advocating for. A people’s Parliament should not belong only to lawyers, PhDs, and career politicians who have mastered how to betray without shame. It should include teachers, farmers, activists, artists, and ordinary Ugandans who know what it means to live under the policies they vote on.

It is one thing to undermine institutions so they cannot serve the people. It is another to disrupt a captured space so it can finally start serving them. NUP’s experiment may be imperfect, but it is rooted in the belief that leadership is not reserved for an elite class that has already failed us and I agree with them.

One thing that @ug_lawsociety should appreciate about all the attention its election is getting is that the public still has hope in them and hope in the resurrection of rule of law in Uganda.

Now is the time for ULS to grab that bull by the horns and put us #BackOnTrack.

Rule of law crumbles when lawyers choose the comforts of daily existence, like a second hand Mercedes Benz E-Class, a 4 bedroom house in Kiira and a few cheap vacations to Dubai, over fixing society’s problems that are rooted in the rule of law going awry.

That approach is short-termist and it actually hurts their profession.

When the rule of law crumbles, courts belong to the highest bidders and everything relies on who you know rather than what you’re capable of.

It’s no surprise that young lawyers are finding a shrinking legal landscape, yet we are in a constantly innovating/evolving world.

We shouldn’t be seeing inertia in that profession. We should be seeing dynamism.

The snobbish comments from supposed polished lawyers reminding the public that they don’t belong are most unfortunate.

These are the same lawyers who perceive themselves to be at the top of an ever shrinking food chain and any threat of youngins showing up to the table is looked at as an existential threat.

It shouldn’t be that way. And it can’t be fixed by “docile” candidates of great decorum.

Change doesn’t come from points of comfort. Change comes when we embrace discomfort. When we dare to look fear in the eyes and say “NOT THIS TIME!!”

Negotiate further on lower cost.

Return on Rentals are so low because of inflated cost of land and related costs.

Do you know that concealing a purchase price on a land transaction for purposes of evading stamp duty tax makes the transfer null and void (the land goes back to the former owner)?

Do your leaders know that if this regime chose to weaponize what I’ve just exposed, your party HQ would be gone and some of the people who participated in this fraud would be in jail?

For avoidance of doubt, please see the signatures on the purchase agreement.

With this suspected fraud, pretty much ALL your senior party leadership can be tried and convicted in the anti-corruption court and you wouldn’t blame the ��junta” for it.
