Zohran Mamdani attended the Pakistan Day Parade in New York, reportedly stating that Pakistan is a beautiful country and other countries should aspire to be more like it.

Hence why it’s disputed. It is our land and those homes are our homes. There are no settlers. You cannot be a settler on your own land.

-Lt.-Gen. John Bagot Glubb (“Glubb Pasha”) — commander of the Arab Legion. British national; former British Army/Colonial Service officer. Hughes describes him as supreme commander and notes that British officers controlled the Legion operationally through him.

Brig. Norman Oliver Lash — commander of the Legion's 1st Division/field commander in Palestine.

Col. Desmond Goldie — commander, 1st Brigade, comprising the 1st and 3rd Mechanized Regiments.

Col. “Teal” Ashton — commander, 3rd Brigade, comprising the 2nd and 4th Mechanized Regiments.

Maj. Bob/R. Slade — commander, 2nd Mechanized Regiment; seriously wounded during the fighting around Notre Dame in Jerusalem.

Maj. Geoffrey Lockett — replaced Slade in command of the 2nd Mechanized Regiment after Slade was wounded in Jerusalem.

Maj. Buchanan — second-in-command of the 2nd Mechanized Regiment; wounded by Israeli mortar fire in the same Jerusalem fighting.

Lt.-Col./Maj. William “Bill” Newman — British/Australian officer commanding a mechanized regiment; Hughes records him wounded in the Jerusalem fighting and cites his own account, Jerusalem Battle, 3 MR Arab Legion.

Maj. James Hankin Turvin — senior British officer exercising overall authority over Jordanian troops in Jerusalem; Anglican records described him arriving to deal with misconduct because he was “in charge overall.”

Sam Sidney — British commander of the 5th Mechanized Regiment, raised during June 1948.

Arthur Cooke — British commander of the 6th Mechanized Regiment and later successor to Lash in senior field command.

Capt. Gray — British Legion officer wounded by Israeli fire in Jerusalem on July 16, 1948, demonstrating that British officers were back in the combat zone after the nominal withdrawal.

There were also British artillery officers commanding the Legion's two 25-pounder batteries, British officers in signals, supply and engineering, and at least two British Royal Engineer/sapper officers who established the Legion's first field-engineer unit.

Hughes says there were at least four British officers per battalion, and only seven of the 44 posts at major rank or above were occupied by Jordanians in May 1948.

That last figure is extremely revealing: 37 British officers and 25 British NCOs were serving with a force of only about 6,000 men, while British personnel occupied command, staff and specialist positions throughout the organization.

Hughes explicitly concludes that Bevin's May 26 assertion that only one British officer had participated in Jerusalem fighting “was a lie,” pointing to the multiple wounded British commanders above. Hughes further says British officers entered the Old City to liaise with the Jordanian garrison companies and Arab irregular forces fighting there.

And the nominal withdrawal is especially revealing. Goldie later recalled that the British officers were withdrawn for only two days so that Bevin could make his parliamentary statement and then returned to their posts. Hughes also cites the claim that Glubb temporarily sent the officers over Allenby Bridge and ordered them back once Bevin had finished speaking.
