How much of the “learning” that happened in school stuck over the years?
I’m guessing very little.
That’s because the learning that occurs in formal schooling is mostly an imitation of learning 🤷🏽♀️
Of 46% of Yr 12 Aus grads who go onto uni, only 16-20% need an ATAR. So, I suppose this is news for approx. 7-8% of 2022 Yr 12 grads - the other 92% aren’t impacted. Another eg. of the ATAR consuming media space when it’s importance is largely overstated. https://t.co/JHLJVGGw51
Continually asking young people to explore 3 Qus.
- Who am I?
- what can I do?
- what challenges inspire me?
Will assist young people to find their purpose and place in the world. It’s about who they become, not just what they do.
How can anyone in all seriousness say that we have been moving AWAY from explicit instruction over the past decade. Is this some kind of parallel universe?
2022 NAPLAN data shows one thing no engagment...no lift in scores. https://t.co/Mc7XUqThU2.
+ More often than not standardised tests shape what is taught and influence what we value as assessment, especially at the senior years. In many schools and across systems, we seem to think learning happens when it doesn’t look like real life 🤷🏽♂️.

Working memory is a mental space that allows us to temporarily hold and manipulate information consciously for a limited time period.
Professor Alan Baddeley defines working memory for us in under 40 seconds 👇
+ Geez, the consequences of this decision could have an impact on co-curricular, evening and community offerings in many schools. Plus the continuity of learning impact of the regular teacher’s absence due to TIL from their class. https://t.co/jujl11cbKV

A placemat we are using at school to support coaches and mentors explore, review and apply @Doug_Lemov 's 63 techniques from TLaC 3.0 /// "Teaching well is relationship building" Couldn't agree more 🍐💥🙏
First, if you want reliable information, pay good money for it. If you get your news for free, you might well be the product.
The second rule of thumb is that if some issue seems exceptionally important to you, make the effort to read the relevant peer-reviewed literature.
In school kids learn to search for reasons why they must be right.
They’d probably learn more if they searched for reasons why they might be wrong and revise their views based on what they learn.
Dylan William argues that education should have four purposes, but is overly dominated by just one - preparation for the world of work - rather than the others: prepare citizens for democracy; transmit culture; enable students to self-actualise #TortoiseEducationSummit
Linda Darling-Hammond once wrote: "If we taught babies to talk the way that most skills are taught in school, they would memorize lists of sounds in a predetermined order and practice them alone in a closet."
