Bangladeshi-American Feminist, Poet, Community Organizer, Activist & Digital Comms Strategist // Founder of @BxMutualAidNtwk // Co-founder of @BAPPnyc 🌹🇧🇩
So proud to be featured in @ajplus vid on Bangladeshi feminist organizing! 🇧🇩
Our grassroots work resonates because we work together as a collective, as folks who deeply care for one another and believe in liberation + justice for all working class folks. Our fates are tied. 🌹
This Bangladeshi American woman survived lupus. Now she's running for city council.
This is how a progressive working-class wave is challenging NYC politics:
Abbu passed away from a tragic accident in Dhaka on Friday, December 31st, 2021.
The pain is so immense that I feel like I’ve died along w/ him. Still in shock & utter disbelief. All I ask from you is to pray for my dad, Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, to reach the highest Heavens.
Today I was officially sworn in as the NYC Council Member for the 39th District. To represent the community that raised me is a dream come true.
I'm bringing my whole self and Brooklyn grit to the seat—the people of the 39th have my back and I have theirs.
Let’s get to work! 🦾
Just a thought—maybe instead of Western nations rushing to impose travel bans globally to prevent spread of Covid-19, they can stop hogging global supply of vaccines + actually make the formula available to countries where vaccinated population remains low due to lack of access.
Check out this incredible 10-part workshop series led by leftist radical Bangladeshi organization in the UK @nijjormanush 🇧🇩
They’ve organized sessions on community organizing, movement politics & radical history + it’s completely free & open to all. First session is tonight ✊🏾
Excited to launch the first session in our bangla fora series. Join us as we trace how bengalis in the UK supported ‘71, and continued to organise against fascists, housing crisis & immigration. Sign-up: https://t.co/4TyPDoQX2Q
Man, I love Bangladeshi restaurants in the Bronx! The owner of a local spot called Khalil Biryani is an expert in marketing—introduced Biden biryani when Biden won & then this inauguration graphic 😆 Bernie eating Biden + other rich millionaires & billionaires - a sweet metaphor
Right now, I feel really seen. I’m realizing how incredibly important it is for people to see representation and what it means that New York City has not had any Muslim women or South Asian and specifically Bangladeshi representation on our City Council.

Baap re baap did we have a wonderful time being in community with radical Bangladeshi organizers and allies. Celebrated wins, commiserated our losses, and brainstormed for the year ahead. What are you waiting for?? https://t.co/xizslxhwGJ
Today’s @BAPPnyc membership engagement event was so much fun. We celebrated our victories, heard from amazing speakers, played our childhood Bangla games and ate samosas and drank chai. If you haven’t joined BAPP yet, what are you waiting for?
On Tuesday, we made history. Now, the work to build an anti-racist, feminist city continues.
I'm excited to announce that WE'RE HIRING for key roles in our NYC Council office!
Are you ready to join our team to deliver for Brooklyn & win real change? 👇🏽

AMAZING NEWS! After 15-days hunger strike, @NYTWA has finally come to an agreement w/ city to lower debt of immigrant taxi workers who’ve been suffering as a result of the medallion crisis. This win wasn’t easy. Taxi workers committed suicide as a result of debt. We honor them.
BREAKING NEWS:
2 words:
WE WON!!!!
+3:
THANK YOU NYC!!!!
We have won a city-backed guarantee! Loans will be restructured to max $170K! No more debt beyond our lifetime. No more risk of losing homes.
DRIVER POWER! UNION POWER! #EndCabbieDebt
I was born & raised in Brooklyn. I'm the daughter of Bangladeshi Muslim immigrants, a Lupus survivor, & an activist.
I'm humbled to be the first Muslim woman elected to the New York City Council and the first woman to represent my district. WE DID IT 😭✊🏽

Just resurfacing @ajplus vid on Bangladeshi feminist organizing + how it has been integral to movement building in our 🇧🇩 diaspora. @ShahanaFromBK’s win represents that radical working class, anti-racist, feminist values & policies are exactly what New Yorkers desire in our city.
This Bangladeshi American woman survived lupus. Now she's running for city council.
This is how a progressive working-class wave is challenging NYC politics:
91% reporting w/ @ShahanaFromBK at over 20K+ votes—surpassing any form of competition. Pretty excited to officially announce it: we have our first ever Bangladeshi-American Muslim feminist City Councilwoman in NYC! So happy ✨🇧🇩
There are no words, only joy. This is our history.
HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE BY @ShahanaFromBK 🇧🇩✨
NYC’s Bangladeshi diaspora is working class—taxi workers, deliverymen, food service employees, street vendors, etc—so to have one of our own in office is huge. We are dreams realized from our parents’ sacrifice leaving their homeland.
Shahana Hanif, a former City Council employee, won her election in a Brooklyn district. A Bangladeshi American, she is the first Muslim woman elected to the Council in its history, despite the fact that the city is home to an estimated 769,000 Muslims. https://t.co/gIfIOPwTBs
