A lot of kids love the idea of being on a Division I team, but they don’t understand the transition from playing to not playing. It’s a 4 year process. And it is a meritocracy that has a seniority component to it as well.
4-5 games into a season and so many players are ready to throw in the towel as a freshman and look for greener pastures.
I always ask what is the end goal for a prospective student athlete. Is it to play pro? Is it getting a lot of playing time? Is it getting an education that translates to a career later on? Or is to get on a roster of a Division I team to show that you made it to your peers. Being on a roster does not guarantee playing time. Being on a roster does not mean immediate success.
When your coach holds you accountable to a higher standard that means he cares. It means he wants and believes you’re capable of more. It does NOT mean you’re being picked on.
