That is born will die,
What has been gathered will be dispersed,
What has been accumulated will be exhausted,
What has been built up will collapse,
And what has been high will be brought low.

“As from a great heap of flowers many garlands can be made,
even so should many good deeds be done by one born a mortal.”

She went from house to house.
Every house had mustard seeds.
But in every house someone had died.
By evening she understood the truth about death.
She buried her child and returned to the Buddha ready to learn the Dharma.
(Therīgāthā Commentary - Story of Kisā Gotamī)
Kisā Gotamī lost her only child.
Mad with grief, she carried the body everywhere asking for medicine that could bring him back to life.
Someone brought her to the Buddha.
The Buddha told her,
“Bring me a mustard seed from a house where no one has ever died.”

“Do not take lightly small good deeds, believing they can hardly help: for drops of water one by one in time can fill a giant pot.”
