Shared Ownership: should disabled people who rely on benefits as their main income be prevented from buying because they can't access mortgage lending?
This upcoming Equality Act case against a leading building society raises potentially novel and untested questions about disabled people's access to Shared Ownership mortgages and home ownership. The claim has been served and the defence is now awaited.

Peak 2026 retail. @adidasUK
Just rang adidas “flagship” store on Oxford Street, asking if a particular pair of trainers in stock & if someone could check… they said No. 😂
Apparently staff don’t have “that kind of process”to physically check whether an item is actually in their shop or not… even though Adidas website says OOS it could still be in stock at their store. They just can’t confirm either way!
Southern Water’s social tariff qualifying criteria is absurdly unfair.
Someone with £1,500 a month left after housing costs, CAN qualify for Southern Water’s social tariff.
Someone with £1,500 a month left after housing costs CAN’T qualify for Southern Water’s social tariff.
Why when they have the same surplus each month ?
Because the 2nd person is paying £900 a month private rent & receives £900 per month UC Housing Element. Straight in / straight out accounting.
Southern Water only looks at total income and NOT actual affordability. #CostOfLiving @MartinSLewis@andyburnham@SouthernWater
I’ve been saying for a while it would be best to equalise social rents to the same level as affordable rents - def not market rent levels! People’s circumstances change and their financial circumstances can & do improve. We currently have a 3 tier housing cost system: social rent; affordable rent; private rent. One caveat is any increase needs to go to local councils or to the treasury to reduce/neutralise policy change and increased welfare bill costs as more people will be reliant on or have an increase need for UC Housing Element. It should not be allowed to go to RP’s as it’ll take money away from public purse. Just my little & humble opinion.
Very interesting article in The Economist, which argues that Andy Burnham should equalise "all social rents to market rates" and give people "who truly need support...extra means-tested benefits to cover the difference."
This would...completely explode the Housing Benefit bill, which is already projected to rise to £39 billion a year very soon?
An interesting Equality Act case about disability, benefits and access to home ownership.

@AndyBurnhamGM Is Jim Ratcliffe going to increase all salaries to his employees, ensuring UC isn’t needed to compensate any low pay by him?He is personally contributing to 9m working age people needing UC to survive.Don’t even get me started on his vile colonisation comment. @EdConwaySky
@Eurostar why can your train not gain entry to a Brussels-Midi platform. Been sat here for ages. Cant get to Amsterdam and now we’ve all missed the hourly connection. Not like they didnt know we were coming!
@hiyaitsfiona Nope… she basically implied that those with fluctuating conditions wouldn’t be included in the severe/lifelong conditions until illness didnt become fluctuating.
@Victoria_Spratt@crisis_uk@matthew_downie Disabled people need better connected areas, near their support networks & this costs more.If people lose their PIP you will see HUGE disabled homelessness. The BMRA needs to be smaller for disabled people & uplifted yearly. Prioritise AH for disabled LHA claiments to save ££££
@Victoria_Spratt@crisis_uk@matthew_downie My rent vs lha diff is £https://t.co/XcQ8r0Pc5r point moving to a smaller prop bc rent will cost the same.I know many who use their PIP. Broad Market Rent area’s are too big, consquently the 30% LHA too low and also not being uplifted in line with rents.
