Kaduna gets its name from the Hausa word "kada," meaning crocodile, because the Kaduna River once had a large crocodile population. It was founded in 1900 by the British as the Northern administration center.
Permit me to say that Kaduna is the Northern Agriculture Powerhouse in Nigeria. When you have Bank of Agriculture having its headquarters in Kaduna you should know it's not play.
First, letโs establish the fact that Kaduna is Big!
The state covers approximately 46,053 square kilometres and has 23 Local Government Areas.
Kaduna is Nigeria's leading ginger-producing state. The crop is particularly important in Southern Kaduna, where communities have built livelihoods around growing, harvesting, drying, processing and selling ginger.
But ginger farming has also faced serious challenges. In 2023, a fungal disease outbreak devastated farms across parts of Southern Kaduna, causing significant losses.
Maize is another major agricultural strength. Kaduna is the highest Maize producing state in Nigeria... No other state match their Maize power.
The popular GMO Maize (TELA maize) was developed through the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) at Ahmadu Bello University in Kaduna state.
You see Kaduna is a strong contender for Tomatoes production in Nigeria. If you're driving from Katsina to Zaria some communities there sundry their tomatoes along road side.. everywhere go just red!
Groundnuts, sorghum, Soyabean, millet, cowpeas and rice also contribute to the state's agricultural diversity. These crops support household food supplies, local markets and businesses that process and trade grains.
Kaduna's agricultural strength is not built around a single crop; it comes from the combination of cereals, legumes, root crops, vegetables and industrial crops.
Kaduna also has a substantial livestock economy, Cattle rearing is an important activity in the state's livestock sector, supported by pastoral and other livestock-keeping communities. Goats and sheep are raised for meat, household income and commercial trade.
Dairy production offers opportunities to collect, process and market milk, while livestock feed creates demand for maize, soybean meal and other agricultural crops.
If you visit Kaduna and you didn't eat Tuqo Chinkafa and Miyan Kuka - your visit is not complete.
Kaduna's agricultural story is not just about what grows in its soil. It is about the people who turn those resources into food, businesses, jobs and opportunities.
Kaduna State carries the slogan "Centre of Learning" because it houses major educational and military institutions, including the Nigerian Defence Academy and Ahmadu Bello University in nnZaria.
Shout out to every food value chain players in Kaduna, we see you and we celebrate you for the amazing work you do to feed every Nigeria.
May you never sow in vain.
