Just returned from Ukraine, where I visited many of our partners. 🇺🇦

One was @TheHALOTrust, whose brave team clears land mines in conflict zones. They use satellite data to plan operations and make them safer & more efficient, e.g. by finding where mines were likely laid. Nothing like seeing this in the field to learn how @planet can help them even more. We also support their work in Syria, Gaza & Sudan.

On May 27th, Amb ISOMATA signed three grant contracts. Japan has provided USD 1,343,202 for these projects, which will be implemented by MAG, The HALO Trust and DASH, to support their humanitarian demining activities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka.

Scaling the heights to support HALO's environmental work!

HALO’s Zita Nazha is taking on Mount Sajama, Bolivia’s highest mountain, standing at an incredible elevation of 6542m. 🏔️

An avid gardener, known for collecting plants and growing vegetables wherever her work with HALO takes her, Zita’s love for nature means she is taking on this immense challenge to support HALO 🇱🇰 #SriLanka’s environmental projects.

Large areas of coastal vegetation were destroyed in Sri Lanka’s civil war, and we’re working with local partners to restore vital mangrove forests.

We’re also providing training in sustainable practices, climate awareness, the installation of solar panels and other initiatives to support local communities.

📅 The expedition starts on 17 July – exactly 50 days from now – with planning and training underway as the countdown begins.

Syrian archaeologists welcome international help as they race to protect cultural heritage.

Journalist @torchiachris explores how Syrian experts are working to restore ancient sites such as Aleppo and Palmyra, which have been devastated after years of conflict and looting.

Key to facilitating this restoration will be making these sites safe by removing landmines and other explosives to allow their work to be carried out safely.

Our CEO, James Cowan in Shindand, Herat #Afghanistan, an area where millions of refugees are returning from Iran and Pakistan to land littered with landmines and explosives.

As more than 50 countries gather in London for the Global Partnerships Conference this week, focusing on the future of international aid, HALO is calling for long-term, predictable investment in global stabilisation and recovery programmes.

With global conflict spreading and humanitarian aid budgets being cut, displacement, instability and food insecurity are being driven at unprecedented levels.

As we approach the fifth anniversary of NATO’s withdrawal from #Afghanistan, funding has plummeted and tragically civilians, including children, continue to be killed and injured by explosives – the deadly legacy of decades of war.

“We urge delegates to close the humanitarian funding gap – to help us save lives and secure peace for generations to come,” says Dr Farid Homayoun, HALO Afghanistan Programme Manager.

We were delighted to join colleagues and partners including @MAGsaveslives, @tech4tracing and @herorats at the @eu_eeas open day in Brussels last weekend, highlighting the impact of EU support on communities affected by conflict and explosive hazards.

🇪🇺 @EU_FPI funding is vital in supporting HALO to clear landmines and explosives across #Ukraine, including making key agricultural land safe for growing crops once more.

Since 2022, with EU support, HALO Ukraine has:
• Released over 1 million sq metres of previously unsafe land.
• Identified more than 4.4 million sq metres of hazardous land for future clearance.
• Delivered life-saving risk education to more than 30,900 people, teaching families how to identify deadly explosives and stay safe.

This work supports farmers and local communities, saving lives, restoring livelihoods, and strengthening food security both in Ukraine and further afield through exports.
