There was a time when stardom was a fortress. In the 90s, Ruby Bhatia wasn't just a VJ; she was the electric pulse of a new, liberalised India, reportedly commanding Rs 1 lakh per show. Rahul Roy wasn't just an actor; he was the face of a generation’s collective heartbreak, the Aashiqui boy whose silhouette defined romance and whose haircut was the bestseller in every saloon. Govinda? He was—and is—the undisputed king of the masses, a comic genius who could make a cinema hall shake with a single pelvic thrust.

Fast forward three decades, and the fortress has been dismantled by the relentless, voyeuristic machinery of social media. Today, these icons find themselves under the harsh, unforgiving glare of a "content-hungry" digital mob that mistakes struggle for failure and evolution for desperation.

Recent headlines have taken a perverse pleasure in dissecting Ruby Bhatia’s career shift. Yes, the woman who once defined "cool" is now a life coach charging Rs 3,000 for a six-month program. To the keyboard warriors, this is a "fall from grace." To any sane mind, it is a woman finding meaning after a nervous breakdown, choosing to make mental health accessible to the masses rather than gatekeeping it for the elite.

Similarly, Rahul Roy has been subjected to the "cringe" treatment for appearing in social media reels with unknown creators. The internet, in its infinite cruelty, ignores the fact that this man is a brain stroke survivor. He is fighting aphasia, paying off legal debts that predated his illness, and trying to "stay active" and work for as long as he is alive. When he asks his trolls to find him "decent work" instead of mocking his reels, he isn't showing desperation; he is showing a spine of steel that most "influencers" couldn't dream of possessing.

Then there is Govinda, the man who once gave the Khans a run for their money, now frequently seen performing at school annual days and weddings. The "dark shadow" of social media brands these "small shows," as if the size of the stage dictates the stature of the legend. Govinda’s response is a masterclass in humility: "I never let my ego influence my work." Whether it’s a Chief Minister’s event or a local school function, the man dances because he is a performer. There is more dignity in one of his "wedding steps" than in the entire collective output of a thousand anonymous trolls.

Social media has birthed a generation of spectators who believe that unless you are at the absolute zenith of your power, you should vanish into the shadows. We have become a culture that feeds on the "tragedy" of the legacy act.

But here is the truth: There is nothing sad about a veteran getting up and going to work. There is nothing "cringe" about an icon refusing to be defeated by a health crisis or a shifting industry. The desperation doesn't belong to Ruby, Rahul, or Govinda. The desperation belongs to the social media ecosystem that needs to tear down giants just to feel tall.

Dear 𝑺𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒉 ji,

You are the elected representative of the Shivajinagar constituency. The Constitution of India expects you to act in large public interest, and your decisions must echo the voice of the people you represent.

Today, that voice is crying out – loud, angry, and desperate.

### 529 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 – 𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧 "𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘧"

Ganeshkhind Road is an iconic artery of Pune. For over 50 years, it has remained 36 metres wide – serving lakhs of commuters daily.

Suddenly, after the Metro work began, a plan has surfaced to widen the entire road to 45 metres.

The official reason: “to ease traffic congestion.”

But we are not naive.

Within 500 metres of a Metro station, additional FSI is granted. If the road is widened to 45 metres, the properties along the road also receive extra FSI.

Is that the real reason for this sudden rush?
A mystery – but a very convenient one.

### 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰 𝘗𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘱: 𝘞𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯

Here is the bitter truth that the PMC is hiding:

The Metro pillars have already been constructed at the existing 36 metre road width. When the road is widened to 45 metres, these pillars will not move. They will stand like concrete walls on both sides.

Result? Three natural, permanent bottlenecks – at Shimla Office, at RBI College, and at a third location – where the road will abruptly narrow, forcing all traffic to merge, clog, and pool.

Widening the road while leaving the pillars where they are will not reduce congestion – it will create new, permanent chokepoints. The traffic will simply rush from one jam to another.

So why widen at all?
The answer may lie in the additional FSI mentioned above.

### 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘚𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳: 192 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘈𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯

In the first phase of Ganeshkhind Road widening, 192 trees stood as “obstructions.”
Citizens fought tooth and nail. They went to court. By the court issue order, PMC had already felled down manjority of the trees.

A court‑appointed committee submitted a report – called it a fait accompli.

Now comes Phase 2.
This time: 529 trees – large, old, heritage trees – have been marked with red numbers.
They are the very identity of Ganeshkhind Road.
They give shade to pedestrians, birds, and weary commuters.

And the PMC calls them “obstruction.”

### 𝘗𝘔𝘊’𝘴 𝘐𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘷𝘴. 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘴’ 𝘐𝘙𝘊‑𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘈𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦

Under the current PMC design layout, the footpath width is kept constant at a mere 2.5 metres – a gross violation of mandatory IRC guidelines.

Let us be very clear about the law:

> IRC guidelines are legally mandatory under:
> - Section 198A of the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988
> - Rule 166 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1999
> - Section 41 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 – which mandates accessible, safe footpaths for all citizens.

A 2.5 metre footpath on a 45 metre road is not only illegal – it is deadly for pedestrians, cyclists, and disabled persons.

Citizens have done the PMC’s job for them.
We have prepared a detailed, IRC‑compliant alternative design that:

- Varies footpath width from 3.25 to 4.75 metres (not a constant 2.5 m)
- Includes a 2 metre dedicated cycle track
- Includes a 1 metre furniture zone (for streetlights, benches, tree guards, utility poles)
- Saves every single heritage tree by aligning the footpath around them – because a footpath does not have to be a straight line.

This design fully complies with the IRC, the Motor Vehicles Act, and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act.

If the PMC adopts this design – as was done for Jangali Maharaj Road, where not a single large tree was felled – not one of the 529 trees needs to die.

### 𝘝𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘈𝘤𝘵: 𝘕𝘰 𝘈𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯, 𝘕𝘰 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦‑𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨

The Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975 is crystal clear:

> Section 8(2) of the Tree Act mandates that before any tree felling is permitted, the authority must consider whether an alternative design or layout can save the trees.

The PMC has not prepared any such alternative plan. By refusing to consider the citizens’ IRC‑compliant design, the PMC is in direct violation of Section 8(2) of the Tree Act, 1975.

This is not a technical oversight. This is wilful, deliberate violation of the law.

### 𝘑𝘔 𝘙𝘰𝘢𝘥: 𝘈 𝘚𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘌𝘹𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐𝘴 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦

Jangali Maharaj Road – another iconic Pune artery – was developed without felling a single large tree.
It is a world‑class example of creative, tree‑sensitive design that respects the law.

If JM Road can be widened and beautified while saving every tree, why can’t Ganeshkhind Road?

The answer is not lack of technology.
The answer is lack of will – and perhaps, lack of honesty.

### 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘶𝘵𝘺 – 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘋𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥

As our elected representative, we demand that you:

1. Immediately stop the process of marking and felling these 529 trees.
2. Direct the PMC to release the full road design and to adopt the citizens’ IRC‑compliant alternative that saves all trees – with footpath width of 3.25‑4.75 m, 2 m cycle track, and 1 m furniture zone.
3. Explain publicly why Metro pillars were fixed at 36 metres – and how widening to 45 metres will not create worse bottlenecks at Shimla Office, RBI College, and the third location.
4. Enforce compliance with:
- IRC guidelines (mandatory under Section 198A, MV Act 1988, and Rule 166, MV Rules 1999)
- Section 41 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016
- Section 8(2) of the Maharashtra Trees Act, 1975
5. Publicly state whether you stand with the people of Pune – or with a handful of powerful interests.

This incident is being reported from Maharashtra and the visuals are absolutely terrifying.
You can see how dangerously iron rods were being transported on a pickup van. The rods were sticking out recklessly, and when the pickup driver suddenly applied brakes, one of the rods pierced straight through a Maruti Ertiga behind it ripping through the front and reaching all the way to the dashboard.
Thankfully, no one was injured. But this was nothing short of a near-death disaster.
This exposes the shocking reality of traffic rule violations in India. If this is the situation in big cities, where traffic police presence is supposed to be strict, then the question is where is enforcement? Why is such life-threatening negligence allowed on public roads?
Next time, it might not end without casualties.

BJP has been in power at center, state and local bodies in Mumbai and Pune for 10 yrs (even with the 3 yr gap in local bodies, the power lay with BJP MLAs). All of us know the state of civic amenities in these cities right now - hats off to you for expecting something other than status quo!
