In every organisation, employee well-being should be a top priority. By creating a safe and open environment, we can enable employees to thrive without fear of stigma or strict zero-tolerance policies regarding alcohol and drugs. It is important to establish a support framework that addresses any underlying issues employees may face. Prioritising staff well-being is essential for fostering productivity and cultivating a positive work culture.
During the panel discussion, we engaged in meaningful conversations and gained actionable insights. However, it is crucial that we don't wait for problems to arise before addressing them. Instead, we should provide support and resources from the very beginning, assigning mentors with expertise in this area to new employees during their induction. This mentorship relationship can foster trust and encourage employees to disclose any relevant concerns later on, thereby promoting connectivity and support.
According to the Home Office, drug abuse costs the UK economy over £20 billion per year in terms of crime, absenteeism, and sickness. Problematic alcohol consumption alone costs £6.4 billion per year in England, as reported by the PMs Strategy Unit. Despite these alarming figures, many employers still hesitate to acknowledge and address drug and alcohol use within their organisation. This hesitation is largely due to the stigma associated with these issues and a lack of understanding that addiction is an illness.
To encourage employers to address drug and alcohol problems among their staff, Occupation Health & HR directors need to emphasise the impact on performance and productivity. Research has shown that only a small percentage of employers provide training to managers on managing drug and alcohol misuse at work, and even fewer train employees on organisational procedures for addressing these issues. It is critical for employers to recognize the importance of addressing substance abuse and take proactive steps to support their employees in overcoming these challenges. It’s events like these that need to help inform change. Frog Systems Limited #EmployeeWellbeing
