Caching is a tool, not a diagnosis.
If you don’t understand why a system is slow,
you’ll add complexity and still miss the real bottleneck.

We had a performance issue.

The obvious answer was caching.

Caching didn’t fix it 👇

What actually helped:
• request deduplication
• tighter rate limits
• better cache expiration strategy
Not more infrastructure.

Caching improved average latency,
but tail latency stayed high.
Cache misses were still expensive — and frequent.

The problem wasn’t slow computation.

It was uneven traffic patterns — a small set of clients repeatedly hitting the same endpoints.

A lot of engineers I talk to lately are worried.

“Is AI going to take our jobs?”
I’ve felt that anxiety too.
But after working with real teams and real systems, here’s what I’ve learned:
AI isn’t replacing engineers.
It’s replacing tasks.
