@rafiq@alv9n@jfGi And expectations change when you take in money. It becomes a job. When this was our hope for the world. And you become a customer. We really dreaded that. Most of us do not have that entrepreneur's spirit.
@rafiq@alv9n@jfGi We are just not the people who want to solicit money from the community. It was a gift to the world, and we really never figured a way to reconcile asking the community for money. We are sorry that we are like that. Both @cshirky and the team wanted to fund it.
@rafiq We also have agreed that the lack of complete automation played a part in the success of it all. Like a backyard gardener tending their flowers, we wanted to feel a connection to the winners.
@rafiq This is still an internet experiment/project for us and we may not be the folks to take it to the next level even though we still believe it currently captures something unique and important for our digital lives.
@thelistserve I can't believe you're shutting down! Why can't you just leave the service running? I'm sure you could make enough though donations of patreon to keep the lights on!
So sad to see @thelistserve shutting down. It was an unconventional conversational space with rich dialogue and ideas from the fringes. Godspeed. You will be missed.
@NNoll@thelistserve I may be the only person who ever sees it, but if you want to email me your listserve submission I'd love to read what you have. I hope maybe the thousands of subscribers will find some way to keep this going because I feel like there was something really imporant there.
@sikander@alv9n @sciencelifeny @zenbonk@yoonjo_choi@joshbegley@cshirky Would you believe that we just realized a few days ago that we may have to change things due to gdpr, but realized that the way we designed it at the start is compliant? No not gdpr, but lack of bandwidth, of ourselves and cost.
