@peacockTV is absolutely faceplanting at Olympic coverage. It shouldn’t be that hard to watch events live or to watch FULL replays within 24 hours. What a waste of money.
Anyone have ideas for teaching immigrant memoir/nonfic for high school freshmen? My PLC has been approved to get books, but we can’t decide on a title… @DisruptTexts#DisruptTexts#teaching#ncte
@sydneycjensen That’s okay — I’m sorry I took it that way. There’s absolutely a need for teachers to look at the authenticity of their assignments. Students have a keen awareness of busy work, and that can certainly impact completion/engagement.
@sydneycjensen Bold of you to assume/imply my assignments are ineffective and inauthentic. Subtle way to make a dig at someone for simply saying their experience has been different than your own. I suppose productive conversation is out of the question here.
@NAEmmanuele @missfliegelman So the question becomes, then, how do teachers (like me) who have only have 35 minute class periods get rid of homework entirely? (Genuinely asking, not trying to be dismissive of the idea.)
@NAEmmanuele @missfliegelman If I were blessed with 80 min blocks, I wouldn’t assign HW either. Many of us have half that under normal circumstances & now have even shorter periods. If students are going to get any scaffolded practice, something has to happen as HW. Not advocating for hours a day, though.
@dr_s_bertrand Undoubtedly necessary, but the *how* is challenging. In-person and virtual settings, no established relationship with students yet... Any advice/resources??
@dr_s_bertrand @PanettaMath That has become my mindset only after I got tenure. I regret that I didn’t do more my first few years. I think there’s an unfortunate Q many teachers have to ask: How do I walk the line of wanting to make a difference and also making sure I still have a job via which to do so?
@PanettaMath @dr_s_bertrand The trouble also becomes once teachers DO I know how to talk about race, gender, etc., the fear of repercussions — an angry parent or admin — can discourage teachers from actually having the conversations at all.
@PanettaMath @dr_s_bertrand That’s tough for me too. I def address it but get so frustrated that it’s not constructive. I usually just send the offender out of the room & deal w them later 1:1. Not a learning experience for anyone then. I also want to find ways to be more proactive vs reactive #tch407su2020
@dr_s_bertrand A3: Our district is supposed to do ELA vertical alignment next year, & I want to advocate for making diversity and equity a top focus of that process. It will require us to assess our current curric and to make immediate, short term, and long term goals for change. #tch407su2020
@JeffKrause19 @Sanders_redbird @dr_s_bertrand Yep, LGBTQ+ is lacking, even though IL now requires (by law) the inclusion of our history. Can’t only be in history class though. An admin implied that I shouldn’t include that content in English class... totally ignoring the inseparability of the two subjects. #tch407su2020
