Speaking at the launch, leaders highlighted the initiative’s three key pillars: Plant, Protect, and Inspire. These pillars reflect a shared commitment to restoring forest cover, safeguarding existing ecosystems, and empowering young people to become champions of environmental stewardship.
Commonwealth Games Uganda and Little Hands Go Green today officially launched the Commonwealth Forest Initiative in Mabira Forest, marking the beginning of a landmark environmental legacy programme that will connect all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories through forest restoration, climate action, biodiversity conservation, and youth engagement.
As part of the launch, 74 indigenous trees were planted to represent the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. The trees stand as a living symbol of unity, shared responsibility, and collective action in response to climate change. The initiative seeks to establish Mabira Forest as the permanent home of a growing Commonwealth Forest, creating a lasting legacy that links sport, nature, and sustainable development. Francis Gimara SC, Head of ALP East Africa, today participated in a high-level panel discussion on Land Access and Rights at the inaugural Acholi Real Estate & Infrastructure Conference.
Organised by Knight Frank Uganda and held at the Acholi Inn, Gulu, the conference is bringing together key stakeholders to shape the future of real estate, infrastructure, and investment in Northern Uganda.
Drawing emphasis from landmark developments such as the Okello Galdino petition judgment, which strengthened customary land rights in the Acholi sub-region, Francis contributed expert legal insights on navigating land tenure security, investment frameworks, and unlocking sustainable development in post-conflict Northern Uganda.
Thrilled to see emphasis placed on the fact that customary tenure is not incompatible with development. There is a need for meaningful conversations on responsible land governance and economic growth in the region.

Phase One was our pilot, and we’ve been learning ever since. In Phase Two, we focused on closing gaps we saw early on, making sure our coaches have both social work and sport experience, and giving them proper technical training across disciplines like football, netball, volleyball, and basketball. We also introduced UOC liaison officers in the settlements to better connect the national body with the field teams.
We moved away from one‑off cohorts by encouraging young people to join community clubs and work with peer leaders, so their sport and development journeys can continue even after a cohort ends. At tournaments, we’re building a larger, more diverse pool of players so more youth can be included and not just the same few.
We’re also improving equipment quality, especially footballs, and looking at how federations can guide our procurement, so we budget better and buy the right materials from the start. On documentation and permissions, especially for refugees, we’re working to be clear and realistic: selection doesn’t mean instant travel, and the safety of the young people always comes first.
Thank you to the UOC, @RightToPlayUg, @AVSIUganda , @YSUganda , and all our partners and coaches for your support. We’re proud of the progress so far and excited for what’s next. - Lydia Murungi Game Connect, Consortium Manager.
Thank you for the incredible work being done through the Game Connect project. I’m proud to support the Olympic Refugee Foundation (ORF) refugee team and look forward to seeing Ugandan refugee athletes shine at the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, where I will be serving as Chef de Mission.
I had the privilege of being in Namboole when the athletes were competing to qualify, and I’m grateful to the Uganda Athletics Federation and all partners for helping them secure their place among so many countries. A powerful story is being written about Uganda and the refugee team, and we hope this will grow even stronger in the next phase of the project, including at LA 2028, where we also hope to see team sports on the list.
The team at ALP is delighted to celebrate a proud milestone for Racheal Ahimbisibwe on her admission to the Bar.
Congratulations on your enrollment as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda and subordinate courts thereto.
We wish you every success in the journey ahead.
