We started Mental a couple years ago to innovate on new ways to get men into mental health.
An early hypothesis was that AI therapy had massive potential here. Men are often looking for help but they have a high tendency to feel over-exposed and ashamed when sharing with another human. AI solves this issue.
So we tried it, working through multiple technical approaches. But retention kept dropping to zero. Therapeutic impact seemed limited, even if there were occasional sparks.
At the end of October, we launched a dramatically more sophisticated technical approach that was not only informed by our expertise in psychology, neuroscience, AI, but, importantly, by all the findings and nuances that we have gleaned over the past couple years.
The difference was night and day.
4 months out retention is wildly flat. And the feedback has often been quite shocking to us. One user told us just last week that our AI therapist helped him more in 7 days than his human therapist had in months!
We realized that although we had achieved our goal of finding a new way to get through to men, that this tech is too important to the world to keep it in an app geared to only a subset of the population.
So we launched Mentla.
