I’m thrilled to be prominently quoted in this morning’s Bloomberg Law article “Kirkland, Palantir Launch AI Tool Targeting Fund Formation.” This type of “partnership” sounds promising but is not without ethical risks, as I point out. Thanks to @bloomberglaw, and to @FaulknerLaw!
@reubenguttman Couldn’t agree more! I joined academia late after 37 years as a trial lawyer and appellate judge. I write law review articles for lawyers, judges, and lawmakers - and have been cited in 20-plus opinions. I teach my students the real world aspects of the doctrines I’m teaching.
@CaitlinCloud9 Went to see a movie on the Bullock Museum IMAX last week. At concession stand, the tatted up and heavily-pierced staffers informed me they didn’t have Diet Coke ( they had other common soft drinks). Saw they had root beer, but only a “ craft” type of never heard of. So Austin!
@whignewtons@McDonalds When the staff at other McDonalds ask what happened this day, tell them “ Winter came for House McDonald. “ Tell them “ The North remembers.”
@CPY87 It can be a surreal experience. Over a year ago, I returned to my old appellate court as an advocate. As they should have, the justices on the panel peppered me with questions that I did my best to handle. It turned out as well as I had expected for my client.
@ProfRobAnderson Unfortunately, as the Ga. appellate courts have demonstrated in at least 2 cases, this leads to more work for the appellate courts to undo those mistakes. For years, I’ve advocated that judges ( like lawyers) need to be tech competent. Sadly, only a few states require that.
@Judge_Burgess This is the lawyer equivalent of my little grandson putting a blanket over his head and calling himself “invisible.” Just doesn’t work that way, at least for adults -and especially professionals.
As the last couple of straggler law review articles from my very busy 2025 finally make it into print ( both bearing 2025 dates that I chuckle at), I want to thank hardworking student editors everywhere. Their jobs aren’t easy. Thanks also to @FaulknerLaw for supporting scholars!
Yet another “straggler” is out - my article “ The Automation of Deportation? Evaluating the Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Immigration Law” in Vol. 77, Iss. 5 of the Rutgers L. Rev! Thanks to the editors at Rutgers, and thanks to @FaulknerLaw for supporting my work!
I’m happy to announce that one of the few remaining “straggler” law review articles from last year has finally been published: “ Read the Writing on the Wall: Why Confederate Messaging Matters in Tennessee Courthouses”, in Vol. 15, Iss. 1 of the TN. J. of Race & Soc. Justice!
@ScottKingField@dodrummond I would pay to see that, Judge - and it would be absolutely the right move. Reminds me of Tom Melsheimer’s summary judgment motion in a case in which Ross Perot, Jr. claimed that M. Cuban had diminished the value of the Mavs. Tom’s “ Motion” was a photo of the NBA Finals trophy!
I’m honored by the invitation to speak at UT Law CLE’s annual Dawson Conference on Criminal Appeals! It was to speak on AI and appeals, and it was even better to see former students, colleagues & friends, and of course fellow appellate judges from all over Texas!
