An article titled "The Physical Death of Jesus Christ" was published in 1986 by The American Medical Association. It explains all that happened, from Jesus' trial to His crucifixion.
Before being caught, Jesus is described as being in great pain and sweating blood in Luke 22. It is known as hematidrosis and is thought to be a rare but common condition.
The crucifixion was regarded as the worst form of execution at the time for the worst of criminals. However, Jesus had to deal with more than just this. He received whippings that were so brutal they tore the flesh off of His body. He received such horrendous beatings that his face and beard were damaged.
His scalp was severely wounded by a 2-3 inch long crown of thorns. The whip used was leather. He was flogged with tiny iron balls and pointed bones. The sharp bones sliced apart His flesh, while the balls inflicted internal harm. He lost a lot of blood because his skeletal muscles, veins, and bowels were exposed. Most men don't make it through this kind of abuse. After receiving a brutal beating, Jesus was made to carry His own cross while onlookers jeered and spat at Him.
Crucifixion was a method intended to cause terrible pain and a gradual, painful death. Jesus' wrists and feet were punctured with nails that extended up to 8 inches. The Roman troops anticipated that the wrist tendon would rupture and require Jesus to sustain His own breathing by using His back muscles. Imagine the fortitude, suffering, and struggle. For three hours, Jesus lived with this reality!
According to the Gospel of John, a Roman soldier stabbed Jesus' side with a spear after He had died, and blood and water spilled out. According to scientists, in hypovolemic shock, a rapid heartbeat causes fluid to collect in the sac that surrounds the heart and lungs. The accumulation of fluid in the lungs and the membrane encircling the heart is referred to as pleural effusion.
Christianity is as ridiculous as it gets in the eyes of the outside world. They consider it to be for the weak. But it is undeniably an ugly sight when you are faced with the truth of the cross. It is gruesome and terrible.
This was the burden that Jesus bore. The cost of the world's sins, all for our benefit. In Jesus, God's wrath is completely appeased.
Sin and Death were judged and eternal life became ours, you too can be free today.
Hallelujah!! Death could not hold him captive.
