I don't think that perp DEXs except for Lighter and Hyperliquid will stay relevant in long-term
Hyperliquid leads in OI, Lighter leads in organic volume and execution costs, even though they don't have points programs running
I don't see a reason why people would stay on other perp DEX without point programs
if you're trading with 9-fig size there is Hyperliquid, if you're fee-sensitive there is Lighter. All other exchanges are pure points washing with no product and liquidity-level advantages over Lighterliquid
and Variational is not really true RFQ, it is OLP trading against users while hedging on other exchanges, it's not a 100% delta-neutral hedge, thus it has delta risks. The delta risk is handled by OLP, so the platform's liquidity is directly limited by OLP's liquidity.
Lighterliquid
From $38ish to low $20s we saw a bunch of factors come into play:
- Team unlocks were approaching and communication wasn't super affirmative about them
- The DAT flows were expected and thus far they have been buying in a more measured manner rather than flooding in bids
- Lighter was TGEing and they were being perceived as a real threat to Hyperliquid's dominance
Since then:
- Unlock cadence has been digested and selling seems to be coming through in smaller and smaller sizes (basically just some team members TPing, don't think Jeff has personally sold any)
- It's pretty clear to everyone now that Hyperliquid is the best perp DEX in town (by a wide margin) and HIP-3 markets have been on a rocket ship
Unfortunately some large idio sellers have appeared and right now $HYPE is still fairly illiquid and vulnerable with the current Bitcoin move. There was actually some decent momentum before the TC seller appeared. This selling should be done by the end of the month.
Going forward I think Hyperliquid's leadership position will continue to be strengthened and stock / commodity perps will likely be one of the biggest narratives of the year. Am also growing in confidence that Hyperliquid metrics have bottomed / or is bottoming by this month (any lower and we go back to the low vol March 2025 levels which I just don't think is probable). OI has been in a slow recovery post-10/10 and market share against CEXs has moved back up recently.
This is still the exchange of the future and now the TAM is much larger than just cryptoasset trading. There are still very few builders in this space with as much integrity as Jeff. Even now Hyperliquid is still a consistent top 1 or 2 protocol in terms of daily revenues.
It's pretty simple actually, potential buyers have checked out in this market and this token is only a year old, with some large sellers that still need to distribute. Have no doubt that when the market mojo returns this is one of the few assets that the market will be quickly willing to get behind.
hyperliquid / atehun
Interesting to see how closely Hyperliquid’s FDV and open interest move together. If that relationship holds, HYPE looks meaningfully underpriced relative to where OI is today.
Strong buy indicator imo.
