Who cares. His show is irrelevant. More concerned about the murder. I wouldn’t really care too much if there was some FCC pressure since his words seemed to justify a recent political assassination. Not thrilled but there’s certainly a debatable justification for it. Had nothing to do with making fun of Trump. I don’t get why this is hard to understand.
If insulting Trump was what led to this then there would be no comedians left lol. This is all a distraction from the true threat to free speech - the threat of being killed for speaking your opinion. That is a hill worth dying on - not the suspension of some dying late night TV show. I think we can all agree on what matters right now.
Also we now know the FCC didn’t cancel the show and Disney put out a statement that they suspended him cause Jimmy said some dumb/insensitive things which is irrefutable and seemed obvious which is why PG’s post was so confusing to me.
So yea, sounds like this was all fake outrage like most things. Also looks like some stations (Sinclair) still don’t want to continue the show. Whether or not that is due in part or in full to the FCC comments is not clear. But right now it certainly doesn’t look like this “persecuting a comedian by an authoritarian” narrative holds any water at all. Being intellectually honest isn’t that hard.
I agree. FCC pressure is no bueno. Jimmy gets fired for saying something incredibly dumb/insensitive - no one should really care. Kirk gets killed for debating thoughts on a college - what we should all be focused on in my humble opinion.
But yes if the comment was that FCC pressure wasn’t warranted I can definitely see the argument and concern. But still could be debatable with the line Jimmy crossed. But this is not “an authoritarian persecuting comedians” and to mischaracterize it this way is intellectually lazy at best and nefariously manipulative at worst.
Yea it’s a real head scratcher. And then somehow extremely intelligent people like PG seem to miss this. I think it’s about the bubble of information that we each live in. It seems so clear to me but I know PG has a good reason to think the way he does.
It sometimes feels like we all live in different worlds where the information that reaches l us seems to rationally justify completely opposing ideas at the same time. I bet everyone in this thread truly feels they are doing the right thing. Everyone talking is the best way to bridge the gap.
I agree, government pressure sets a bad precedent. Jimmy absolutely crossed the line by contradicting the reports and seeming to justify a political assassination. The show was failing anyway, but that commentary was reckless.
I’ll admit my emotions were high after Kirk’s murder, and for the first time I caught myself wanting that kind of intervention. That was eye opening and a little scary, because it helped me understand how others justify “canceling” someone over far less. In this case it was an actual murder, but for some on the far left a simple disagreement (like misgendering) can feel just as triggering. Different tripwires, same reaction.
@jarrichvdv@cheungkarkei@paulg Free speech doesn’t mean guaranteed airtime. There was many good business reasons to fire Kimmel. The FCC pressure is dicey for sure. But Kimmel getting fired was more than justified. The show had less viewers than most small YouTube channels.
@OrlandoTaxus@cullend@paulg@grok Btw a lot of the political speech on the far left is responsible for this murder in my opinion. I can tell you are one of them since you mentioned nazis in the first 5 min of our discussion. Fortunately your attempts to gaslight and twist are getting crushed in the real world.
@phillippepayant@paulg Seemed straightforward to me too. This whole thing is a head scratcher. People are acting like Kimmel was canceled for just making a Trump joke. Concern about FCC pressure is reasonable but painting this as some authoritarian silencing all dissenting comedians is pretty wild.
@OrlandoTaxus@cullend@paulg@grok There is evidence man. Look for source material like the governor and the feds direct reporting. Also the bullets, the text messages, the trans girlfriend, etc etc.
@OrlandoTaxus@cullend@paulg@grok Let’s wait for all the evidence to come out.I know what my bet is based on common sense and the evidence so far. But wait and see is always best.
Not a fan of the FCC pressure. I agree it’s out of line. Do I think Kimmel show should have been suspended for the comments he made - 100% but not via pressure. I’m much more concerned about the political violence and the disgusting public response to it from a large group of people.
