How to deal with angry clients?

I’ve been a freelance marketer/copywriter for a long time. Since January 2023.

And honestly, I think in those 1.5 years, I’ve made soooooooo many mistakes as a copywriter. But they’ve all been pretty minor.

Insignificant.

I’ve been able to mostly skate through my career so far without having any major fu*k-ups that would cause significant lost revenue or embarrassment.

However…

I’ve had 3 doozies that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

3 major mistakes I remember in my almost 2 years of freelancing that I wish never happened. I looked so stupid. So unprofessional.

They were bad enough that if I were the client, I would have fired me.

But I know this one trick that I learned a looooooooong ass time ago (because I’m ancient) to get through those really bad mistakes without getting fired.

If you ever find yourself in a pickle as a freelancer, just remember this.

It’s the Nail In The Yogurt story.

Imagine you plan to go to a Yogurt shop after work.

You’ve had a terribly long day, everyone’s annoying you today, and the only thing you give a shit about all day is this delicious premium Yogurt.

You drive there straight from work for 45 minutes to get a cup of your favorite ‘limited-edition’ strawberry flavor Yogurt.

After waiting in line for 27 minutes behind a bunch of screaming children, they finally hand you your cup of Yogurt that you paid $16 for.

Within 3 spoonful's, you notice something hard lodged in your cup of Yogurt.

It’s a nail.

Not a fingernail. A fucking nail.

Like a stainless steel nail. And it’s in your premium Yogurt.

HOW in the world does that get in your cup of Yogurt that you waited all day for, and paid SIXTEEN DOLLARS for?

You’re pissed.

You speed-walk up to the cashier and tell her you found a nail in your Yogurt and something needs to be done about this.

The girl working there is obviously young and doesn’t like her job.

She tells you to relax, puts a glove on, removes the nail from your cup, and hands it back to you.

That was the extent of her customer service.

Now, you’re 10x more pissed than you were before – and I cannot stress this enough – A NAIL IN YOUR PREMIUM ‘LIMITED-EDITION’ YOGURT.

Depending on how bad your day at work was, this could be an end game for you. You might just go lay down on some train tracks.

But let’s rewind for a second here.

You find the nail in your Yogurt.

You march up to the cash register.

You explain the situation to the girl who works there, and because she loves her job and wants every customer to be happy with their product, she is absolutely, positively, completely mortified at what you just told her.

Her heart rate rises to about 120 bpm, and you can see her eyes welling up.

“Oh…my…goodness gracious,” she replies.

“In my 3 years of working here, I have never had anything this horrific happen. I absolutely cannot stress how disgusting this is. I would NEVER accept this from myself or my team. I am so sorry.”

She continues on, through tears, as her vocal pitch crescendos further:

“We’re shutting down the store for the day. I can’t, in good conscience, allow this place to continue to accept customers after knowing what you’ve just had to go through. And the employee who made this Yogurt is fired.

Not only am I going to personally make you a new Yogurt, but you, sir, will never have to pay for Yogurt ever again at this establishment.”

She goes on. And at this point, you’re not even really mad anymore.

She’s so much more pissed than you were.

You tell her... “Hey, it’s like…really not that big of a deal. It’s just a nail. I just wanted a new Yogurt...”

And such is the art of dealing with angry clients.

All you have to do is get angrier than them.

“What if my potential client is an asshole?”

Sometimes you’re on a sales call and you just don't like the other person.

Their vibe, the way they act just puts you off.

Or he/she just annoys the f**k outta you.

But you NEED the money.

If you’re ever in that situation, here's my two cents:

IT. IS. NOT. WORTH. IT.

The headache that comes from working with people you don't like is not worth a couple hundred or even a thousand bucks.

At least for me.

Don't get me wrong. You don't have to be best friends with all of your clients.

But if you wouldn't even have a coffee with them, because he/she is just THAT unpleasant to be around...

…save yourself the shit load of problems and say no.

If your relationship with your client isn't at least solid…

…they will take ages to respond.
…they won't show up to calls.
…they will complain about everything.
…and they will make your life hard.

It's better to say "no" or cut them off completely and use that time to get a better client.

Because most people have clients who are not on the same wavelength as them. They work for days, weeks and in the worst case scenario… months but, nothing ever happens.

They will get ZERO results and earn very little money in that time.

Maybe there are some exceptions where service provider and client hate each other but still make it work.

But I personally don't know any. And haven’t seen any.
Even if that is possible, I would still not wanna work with someone I don’t like.

Helps me not lose my sanity and peace.

How long will it actually take to land a client?

I get a lot of people asking me:

"I've been prospecting for X amount of days. I've sent out X amount of emails and haven't closed a client yet. What's wrong? How long should this take?"

I've gone through that exact process many times (I still do to this day), so I can give you a clear cut answer.

Bear with me as I explain this to you the best way I can

…using a carnivore named Jeff.

Imagine you had to convince a prehistoric tribe of hunter/gatherers on the benefits of farming.

You start talking to their chief.

He's a big dude named Jeff.

While he gnaws on a bone you explain to him that farming has many benefits.

You don't have to constantly move around. You can stay in one spot, plant some seeds, water the seeds, see them grow. With a little bit of love and time you get food.

Jeff asks you if this is only plant food.

You explain to him that the plant food can be used to feed cattle. And you can then eat the cattle.

Jeff likes this idea and gestures for you to demonstrate this 'farming' thing.

So you pick a nice spot with enough sunshine and fertile soil.

You get a handful of seeds and show the tribe how to plant them. The tribe is really excited about this new development.

Next day rolls around and Jeff asks you what's up with those seeds?

He went to check it out and nothing has happened.

You explain that it takes some time. Things are happening, but it requires some patience.

This happens again the next day.

And the next. And the next.

Every day.

FOR A FULL MONTH!

Jeff runs out of patience and he decides to talk to the other hunters in the group.

It doesn't take long for them to come to an agreement.

They inform you that farming is a scam.

Planting seeds is in fact …a scam.

It's ALL a scam.

And YOU... talked them into this bullshit!

So Jeff and his friends tie you to a branch, skin you alive and proceed to eat you.

What's The Moral of This Story?

Two things:

1/ Make sure you qualify for cannibalism before you try to help primitive humans with anything.

2/ Even if it doesn't feel like you're making progress... you are still making progress.

When you plant a seed there are things happening below the surface... but you don't see that above the surface.

That's what prospecting is.

Following up.
Building skills.
Playing the odds.
Reaching out to more people.

Getting closer to a yes, even if it doesn't feel like that.

I've done this process repeatedly for different businesses in different industries.

And I know that keeping at it EVERYDAY is the hardest part.

But the good thing is, this gets much easier if you can get into the habit of just putting in the reps and learning from mistakes you make.
