Ghana tells its children to pick science. Then it builds no labs, funds no research, creates no jobs, and watches biology graduates beg for relevance in a market never built to need them. The course was never useless. The system made it look that way.
KNUST, UG and our other public universities are producing Biological Science graduates into a job market that essentially tells them their degrees are decorative
The research institutions, biotech firms and public health labs that should absorb them simply do not exist at scale in Ghana.
Researchers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi have identified 101 bird species across the KNUST campus.
We’ve recorded some of these bird calls from around campus.
Can you identify them?
Drop your guesses and tell us where you’ve heard them before.

Ghana's national flower is a drought-resistant lily. Many African nations have different types lilies as their national flowers. Ghana's Impala Lily is also known as the Desert Rose because of its survival skills in the water-challenged savannah, just like Ghanaians are survivors
Genome sequencing goes off-grid! 🚐🧬
Researchers from Johns Hopkins successfully sequenced the Red Coachwhip snake (Masticophis flagellum piceus) genome using a mobile lab in a camper van.
Using a ONT Nanopore P2 Solo sequencing and Bento Lab, they show that genomes can be assembled at relatively low cost and without the need for a large laboratory!
🐍 Nuclear & mitochondrial genomes of Masticophis flagellum piceus sequenced
🐍 BUSCO completeness score better than most current snake genomes
🐍 All work done in field- or field-simulated settings
A great step toward decentralising and democratizing genomics, especially for research in remote locations!

About a decade ago, a baker in a small mountainous village in southern Austria noticed his cow doing something unusual. When Veronika had an itch, she would grab a stick in her mouth and use it to scratch her body. Over the years, the brown bovid’s technique improved. She could pick up objects as large as a broom or rake and move them around with her prehensile tongue, changing their length and orientation to ensure the best possible scratch.
The behavior isn’t just a clever trick: It’s the first documented case of tool use in cattle, scientists report.
And, it turns out, one of Veronika’s skills has only been seen in humans and chimpanzees. Learn more: https://t.co/iVyXt180Oh
