I turn 37 years old today. Here are 37 ways to be a better Catholic Husband, Father, and Man:
1. Get up early before your wife and children — start your days with purpose and intentionality. Rise as soon as the alarm sounds, without hitting the snooze button, and say “yes Lord!”
2. Begin the day on your knees — bring your body, mind, and spirit together in prayer before God.
3. Pray the Liturgy of the Hours Faithfully, at very least Morning and Night Prayer.
4. Get your feet on grass and the sun on your bare skin every morning.
5. Strength train, sprint occasionally, walk daily — be strong and fit for your family and set a good example of bodily health and self-discipline.
6. Eat an animal-based, whole foods diet that nourishes you and builds you up for your vocation. Be a man and eliminate junk food and snacking.
7. Fast occasionally — from meat on Fridays and from all food once in a while.
8. Learn to feast well in a way that gives glory to God.
9. Attend Sunday Mass with your family and occasional daily mass as well.
10. Embrace the Sabbath — plan and prepare for holy leisure with your family and keep “working” at doing it better and better.
11. Find an adoration chapel in your area and commit to a weekly Holy Hour.
12. Go to confession monthly (at least).
13. Use Friday as a day to intentionally pray and sacrifice for people in your life who need it.
14. Write down your goals and check in on them often.
15. Examine your conscience daily, learn from your mistakes, thank God for your blessings.
16. Get to know your Blessed Mother and ask her for help and intercession.
17. Pick 3-5 saints to get to know as well. Read their biographies and begin asking for their intercession.
18. Make a dedicated spot in your home for prayer. Make it beautiful.
19. Get to know your local priests, have them over for meals, pray together, and engage in edifying conversation.
20. Connect with other growth-minded Catholic men for encouragement and accountability. Pray, discuss goals/challenges, and push each other to grow in prayer, virtue, and vocation. (DM me about joining the BCM Digital Fraternity!)
21. Start reading more. Set a goal for how many pages of a book to read daily and then increase over time. Have a few books going in multiple categories: something spiritual, something practical, something beautiful.
22. Learn about the Cardinal Virtues and use the concepts to continually evaluate your life and take steps to grow in holiness.
23. Evaluate your information diet. Eliminate people/things from your social feeds that don’t help you grow in prayer, virtue, and your vocation.
24. Counter every temptation to lust by praying God’s blessing and protection on the women you encounter
25. Avoid news/church drama unless it is strictly necessary for the fulfillment of your particular vocation.
Anthony Edwards on why the Wolves were ready for this inbound play from the Warriors at the end of regulation:
“Fuckin Micah a genius, dawg. We called timeout. Micah didn't even go to the coaches huddle. Micah came to our huddle and was like, 'This what they're gonna run. Be ready for this.' And they came out and ran the exact play. Micah is a genius.”
Most plan on being generous with what we have once we hit a certain number in the bank. That day usually never comes:
Every year my investors will call me and say:
“Hey, one day when I sell my business, I'm going to do more of what you do, I'm going to be more generous.”
And I always say:
“Hey, with all due respect, you're not going to do it.”
They're like, “what, what do you mean?”
You’re not going to do it because you're not doing it now. And if you can't do it now when you have less, you get a hundred million dollars in your bank account, you think it's going to make your life easier? It’ll have more control of your life. And so I always tell them: you have to start being generous today. - Micah Lacher
Only one sculptor in history ever came close to Michelangelo. In some peoples' eyes, his technical mastery even surpassed the Renaissance genius.
