Governor Newsom’s press office responded to criticism of AB 2624 with a message:

“Get the facts.”

We agree.

But what the government thinks of Nick Shirley — or any journalist — is constitutionally irrelevant.

The First Amendment protects the press from government.

It doesn’t protect government from the press.

Can anybody please tell me how this is legal? You can’t stop somebody from expressing their first amendment rights. Nor can you stop people from wanting to investigate on how OUR TAX DOLLARS are being spent.

This is the government our forefathers warned us about.

Trump isn’t your dictator. California legislators and their governor is.

This needs to be challenged and honestly our DOJ needs to get involved.

California’s AB 2624 — nicknamed the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” — has passed the Legislature.

It now sits on Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk, awaiting his signature or veto.

The issue is bigger than one journalist or one bill.

It’s about the dynamic government creates when independent journalists face greater legal risk for investigating organizations receiving taxpayer money.

Less scrutiny means less accountability.
