@numbmyfeelings@one_onemind I think it’s important to Deltarune that the Dark World is the fun, maximalist part and the Light World is the relatively dry, minimalist part. If the Light World is too video game-y, you risk cheapening the difference between both worlds that’s become central to the plot.
I think about this a lot with Deltarune. More Castle Town and Festival content? Would be cool, but would shred pacing. Festival mini games? Would be fun, but would take the focus away from the characters. Every design choice is a tradeoff, even if it seems intuitively “better.”
Theyre joking but unironically something that’s very important to understand about making games (and other stuff too) is that it’s not just bad ideas that need to be cut. Sometimes, it’s good ideas too. Toby’s willingness to do that, even for the small stuff, is admirable to me.
@one_onemind Sorry, when I said festival mini games I was specifically talking about people who wanted fully playable mini games. Played by the player, not the characters.
@gonergnostic I agree that Castle Town is important but so is everything else. The main focus of each chapter so far is the new Dark World, and I think that’s how it should be. Adding significantly more content to Castle Town would make the game as it is now significantly less focused.
@gonergnostic Being optional wouldn’t give it a free pass. It would be too much power in the player’s hands to have them make overly significant pacing decisions, because they can (and often do!) make the wrong decision to just chase more content. They can’t be expected to see the big picture.
@thrivereternal Every complaint about not having enough to do between story sections makes me remember Toby using Andrew Hussie's "rube goldberg machine puzzle using a giant stone bust of Macaulay Culkin in the middle of Noelle's house, for more gameplay" idea as a punchline in the newsletter
@greenyphatom I still feel that it plays an important role in the story. It's also nice that there's a place where you can just have fun and not progress the game much. I'm just saying there's a limit to how much time you want it to take up.
@nhshadow9 But that creates a different problem where you’re interrupting the momentum of an important Dark World segment to mess around in Castle Town. It would feel very disconnected to me.
If you look at things in a vacuum than yeah a lot of things could have been conventionally “better.” But if you look at it comprehensively, you see the rewards that having restraint and making unintuitive trade-offs earn.

@Moonlily_99@chainyposter I haven’t played the line but does the main character enjoy what they’re doing before they have a moral realization? Because than that would still be resonance
@TheRedGoner Chapter 5 basically confirms this as far as I’m concerned. The characters who represent Undertale (specifically the pacifist route) and escapism fail in the end. HMMMMM I wonder what that could mean
I don't really get why some people think a UTDR character will get added to Smash. Like have they EVER added an indie character to Smash as a real, bona fide fighter?? And no Steve doesn't fucking count
