We do not talk often enough about the doctor training numbers shortage. Previous governments have artificially created these bottlenecks for speciality training. We have 1000s of doctors who want to specialise but can’t.
This is a manufactured scandal that is going unreported.
Besides the fact that @gmcuk should not be regulating PAs.
PAs will pay £320
Drs pay £455
Yet a 1st year PAs earns £10,000 more than a 1st year Dr.
Everything in the system is stacked to disincentivise & punish Drs.
This @FT long read on the use of #PhysicianAssociates in the #NHS has generated hundreds of comments. A key concern is the lack of national standards around what PAs can and cannot do for patients. https://t.co/zGVdWuMTwF
Either a medical degree & post grad exams are needed to safely practice medicine, or they’re not.
Incredibly, @gmcuk, @NHSEngland, @RCPhysicians & @rcgp have decided they’re not. Non-doctor substitutes, PAs, can treat you instead - on doctor rotas.
Did you consent to this? 🤷♀️
Hi @RCSnews
Can you explain how a PA is working at ‘mid level’ above junior doctors with less than 1 year’s experience?
Why do doctors have to go through:
5 years medical school
2 years foundation
2-3 years core surgical training
MRCS exams
…to be considered ‘mid level’?
1 Thread on #mpox which is in the news again since a returning traveller was diagnosed in Sweden with a new more dangerous strain which reached Europe for the first time.
In the 2022-23 global outbreak I was clinical advisor to @WHOEurope
Here’s what I think you need to know.
Men tend to choose higher paying careers like doctor, engineer, lawyer, or CEO.
While women tend to choose lower paying careers like female doctor, female engineer, female lawyer, or female CEO.
🚨IMPORTANT: UPDATE ON PHYSICIAN ASSOCIATES SCANDAL
@TheBMA has called on Health Secretary @wesstreeting to stop dangerous substitution of doctors as 13,000 doctors add their names to letter warning of grave concern & risk to patient safety over current use of MAPs in the NHS
Why are we pushing for legal action over Physician Associates and Anaesthesia Associates?
What is the aim of the case?
This short video explains why this action is so important for patient care.

Elected BMA reps are obliged to ask you to support the deal, as it was a condition of the negotiations.
Read between the lines. I'm not an elected rep, and can tell you that you should be rejecting a 4.05% uplift.
Strike again. Reject the deal.
When I vote I don't want unaffordable tax cuts.
I want hospital beds.
Libraries reopening.
Trains that run on time.
Kids who aren't too hungry to learn.
Rivers that don't run with slurry.
Local councils not bankrupted.
Politicians who don't venally line their own pockets.
I’m simply horrified to see @NHSEngland now literally breaking the law in how it misrepresents physician associates & other allied health professional - who are NOT doctors - to the public.
