I spoke with Kevin Ortiz Barros today — the 21-year-old Colombian man living in Utah who was detained inside immigration court.
Kevin says that during his detention, he was moved across multiple states over several days without being told where he was going or why, forced to sleep on the floor near toilets, and treated like a criminal despite having no criminal record.
He told me the conditions were “inhuman” and said the experience left him scared and confused.
He was released in San Diego on Saturday. He said he thought he was going to be forced to walk back over the border before learning that he had won his case.
Kevin is now back in Utah and says his plan is to continue following the legal process and wait for his green card appointment — even though he admits he’s afraid it could happen again. His message to others navigating immigration court: don’t go without a lawyer. @KUTV2News
Kevin Ortiz Barros will be released from ICE detention.
His lawyer filed a habeas corpus petition and won. He was being held at a small ICE detention facility inside the Mesa Gateway airport in Phoenix.
His lawyer - “the government didn’t fight and basically capitulated because they knew they were wrong.”
I’ll share more details as I have them. @KUTV2News

"There is nobody more American than American Indians! We are America, how can you possibly target Native Americans? It's legally impossible!"
@repastoddard Also, as other people have pointed this out being a reference to the Hole In The Wall Gang, it probably looks a lot more startling to people unfamiliar/outside of Utah
