@memeticsisyphus The real problem with the left solution is everyone merges at different times. So the back of the line may never move because so many merges are happening in front of them. On the right everyone is moving at the same speed and one merge point keeps the two lanes fair.

Had the same issue in Japan. Went through a form of security getting off the train. They were not happy that I had two decorative swords that I was intending to check. Got a personal escort to the airline counter. Later I found out anything bigger than a small pocket knife is illegal to carry. I'll always wonder how close I came to being locked up abroad.
