And yet perfectly sane-looking people in Hackney and Oxford read those figures and conclude we are living through brutal cuts that must be reversed by even more spending.

How is this possible?It isn’t lying. It isn’t even stupidity in the normal sense. It is the true believer psychology I’ve written about elsewhere an emotional spasm dressed up as policy. “My truth” replaces evidence. Facts that contradict the narrative are simply ignored or re-labelled “austerity.”
