Just how different are Google and Bing search results these days?

If you're Reddit, Amazon, or Home Depot: Extremely.

I took 10,000 hand-picked "best [product]"-related terms to see just how much overlap there is between the two.

I was initially surprised by how badly Reddit ranks in Bing.

Then I remembered that a year ago, Reddit blocked Microsoft from crawling their site, and there have only been partial improvements since.

(Interestingly, I can't find any news stories with a proper update.)

Here are a few more insights from my research:

- Bing really loves Forbes' product reviews (ranked 2nd overall) 👨‍💻
- 48 domains are present in both search engines' top 100 🤝
- Just 162 of the top 500 domains in each overlap 📉
- Both rank around the same number of domains & subdomains: 12.2K vs 12.4K 📊
- Google promotes far fewer individual URLs: 82K vs 120K 📉
- Bing is FAR more likely to rank questionable sites. Quite a few made the top 100 overall 📈

As with any analysis of this type, performing the same test again would likely yield slightly different results. My aim is always to be directionally accurate, and for anything that requires it, I would rerun the numbers.

What you see in one subset of SERPs doesn't always align with the broader picture.

Here I was only looking at standard organic results, and didn't count site links for the likes of Reddit.

(I have the numbers if anyone wants them, but I thought it made it less of a fair comparison.)

I'm kind of fascinated by Bing, especially as Ahrefs data shows it still drives more traffic than the three major AI assistants combined. Yet it gets 1/100th of the attention.

I get it: One is emerging and super interesting, while the other is familiar and not expected to grow massively anytime soon.

Still, if you would like me (or Ahrefs) to investigate Bing ranking factors further, it could be fun to dive in further.
