Thileepan was just 23-years-old when he decided to take a bold stand.

On this day 39 years ago, in front of 100,000 people Rasiah Parthipan - fondly known as Thileepan - began a hunger strike. He vowed he would have no food. And not a single drop of water.

As a former medical student at the University of Jaffna, he knew what his body would undergo.

He knew that the process of starvation is excruciating.

But he was determined.

His demands were simple. End the detention of Tamil political prisoners, end the opening of Sri Lankan military camps and an end the colonisation of the Tamil homeland.

At such a young age, he was prepared to give his life, in a non-violent act of protest, for his peoples’ freedom.

The sad part is there’s so many Indian-Americans I know and am aware of who have tried to be the “model minority” and have voted and participated in the uplifting of people who are with the Trump administration or align with the viewpoints and are straight up white supremacists and idk if it’s from a place of fear or fitting in probably both but hopefully the message is received that these people don’t give a shit about you and will throw you away not because of anything you’ve done, but because you don’t look like them.
