🇱🇧 US Brokers Israel-Lebanon Framework That Keeps Israeli Troops in the South

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon at the State Department on Friday, signed by the two countries’ ambassadors and billed as a “first step” toward ending months of war. Hezbollah, which holds the weapons at the center of the conflict, was not party to the deal.

Key points:

🔸 Israeli forces will remain in their “security zone” in southern Lebanon. Netanyahu called this “a major achievement” and tied any withdrawal to Hezbollah’s full disarmament

🔸 The deal creates two “pilot zones” where the Lebanese army would take exclusive control as Israeli troops redeploy, one south of the Litani River, one north

🔸 A full ceasefire is conditioned on Hezbollah halting fire and pulling all fighters from south of the Litani, terms the group has not agreed to

🔸 Israel’s ambassador declared: “Iran is out. Hezbollah is out.”

Hezbollah rejected the agreement. MP Hassan Fadlallah warned Lebanese authorities could not enforce it “unless they go, with American support, to civil war,” and called it an attempt to derail the separate US-Iran talks.

More than 4,000 people in Lebanon have been killed in Israeli strikes since March; Israel continued striking the south this week even as the deal was finalized.
